new planted tank - thoughts/ideas? | |
upikabu Fish Addict Posts: 591 Kudos: 393 Votes: 44 Registered: 08-Jun-2005 | Hi, I'm setting up a new 2ft tank (24"x12"x12" ) to host mostly cories (and hopefully breed them). This is also my first planted tank, so please excuse my ignorance with some of the plants I've chosen. This is what it looks like now after a weekend of plant shopping binge: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v58/witje/Fish/2ft_planted.jpg What do you think? Do you think there are too many plants - i.e. too busy - especially in the background? I had a bit of trouble placing the driftwood with anubias (I bought this one first the week before) since the anubias' leaves are a bit big already. I'm going to set up a bigger tank in the near future so I can move some of the plants to the new tank if necessary. Any thoughts or ideas to make it look better would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! That Anubia is quite big, but really beautiful. I don't see any problems with Corydoras, they are going to have lots of fun in that tank. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

I just hope the plants will be ok a month from now, as I have no experience with aquatic plants whatsoever (and never had much luck with regular plants either) - wish me luck! I love the anubias too; when I saw it at the LFS I knew just had to get it! Mango: I seriously doubt it's better than yours - I've seen the pics on your mangoplants site and they're awesome! I don't think mine is worthy of being there, but you can use it. PM me if you need more info. I think the foreground is a bit sparse though - any ideas on what else to put there (that would be ok on 1mm gravel)? -P |

Did you find that piece of drift wood at ae aquariums if so thats the piece i wanted]:| ? |

I'm using an 18 watt gro-lux bulb inside a Dalbarb single housing. Is it weird because only the back half of the tank is lighted? That's where I put the housing. Just out of curiosity, What cories do you want to breed & how many do you plan on having in the tank at a time? Cory Habrosus - probably about 8 of them initially. But after hearing how fragile they are (see my thread in the Bottom Feeders section), I'll probably start out with a couple of male Endlers to mature the tank first (it's just finished fishless cycling today). Cheers! -P |

Go to a nearby hardware store, and purchase a any flourscent tube that is labeled DAYLIGHT or SUNLIGHT, and install it. You will be amazed at the difference in the appearance of the tank. When growing plants in an aquarium there is no reason to endure that "look." Second, I like the beginning of the tank. I say beginning because the plants have to mature within the settings that you planted them, and the tank has to mature. Give the tank about 3-4 months, take another picture, and compaire them. Then, decide after months of pruning, or not, what you might want to change, if anything. Hold off for a while and then publish another link and ask again.
