This was a very spur-of-the-moment idea. One of my 10g tanks had been set up as a brackish paludarium until the fiddlers-who I was told wouldn't bother fish-killed all but two glassfish and then went after each other ]:|

I was mad at the tank for a while and let it sit, also letting the glassfish become calm again. I'd been throwing around all sorts of ideas for the tank but after all that trauma I decided to go back to basics with a guppy tank.

It was a one hour project, including draining probably 95% of the water, major clean up, collecting plants from other tanks, and adding the fish.

So I thought I'd share a before & after pic:

edit: the rocks were collected outside my apartment building, should I add more? And any other suggestions or ideas are welcome

Nice job on the makeover. What did you do with the remaining glassfish ?
I like the rocks how they are, it might look crowded if there were more I think.

WOW! what a makeover!

I'd leave it simple and clean like you have it for now, I love the look of the rocks. Grab some more and build up on the left hand side. Use silicone as you feel necessary to keep them from falling. I'd be a little worried about them trapping the warmer water from the heater but with the filter placed there I think you'll be okay...and the heater could always be nudged more center if it's a problem. Rocks get algae it seems and if you're up for it I'd suggest giving them a scrub down as it happens. I love the color they have now and would hate to see it altered.
The hornwort looks good right where it is ...if you can get it to stay there ...I think it ofsets the weight of the rocks with the light needles.

Great job! I love it

One more suggestion: I think I would move the rock with the hole in it to the right corner to give the tank some more balance - you could even have it diaganolly in the corner - just as long as it offsets the large rocks on the left side. i think doing this would give it a nice "rule of thirds" feel, and would open up some of the foreground to more planting.

Compleatly agree with moving the rock with the hole...it's just a bit central...moving to the right would be good...just am not sure which would look better...front or back corner :%). Moving it to the back will put it on the same plane as the other rocks and may make the tank too back heavy (visually). Moving it to the front will trap "white space" behind it ....I'm hesitant to suggest adding any more plants, but possible something tall and flat (thinking val like) behind the circular hole......
Oh...and forgot to mention it before....background please !.

I certainly like the make over, simple yet effective.

I would completly remove the rock with the hole, and replace it with a smaller rock of the same type as the two existing ones. Maybe a litle more to the left.

See if you also can find some very small rocks again same type and spread them at the base this will take the harsh line away base - rock.

A few small plants scattered inbetween these small rocks would also help.

I would also consider the folowing.
A tall plant at the rear of the rocks to hide the heater.

Also paint the rear of the tank black.

I'm definitely planning to add a background

I picked up a third piece of rocks that's similar size to the two already in the tanks. I also got seven regular small rocks that are maybe a shade lighter. They're kind of rough as opposed to smooth river pebbles.

Removing the rock with the hole isn't a problem. Should I put the third rock in the right corner or with the other three?

Regardless of where I put the rock I'll need some sort of plants for the back...should I go with all of one type or maybe two? Any recommendations?

What sort of plants would you recommend to hide the heater? The space there is small, would a plant be affected being so close to a heater?

Quick update since I was working on this tank yesterday.

Added the third large rock, and smaller rocks in ~3 sizes. I like the fact that they're a bit lighter in color.

Rearranged the plants and I ordered three giant hygro for the back.

I'm thinking a black background ???

edit: the white showing on the filter is a sponge so my fry don't get sucked in, I'll have to play around with that
