one hour tank makeover (updated) | |
Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | This was a very spur-of-the-moment idea. One of my 10g tanks had been set up as a brackish paludarium until the fiddlers-who I was told wouldn't bother fish-killed all but two glassfish and then went after each other ]:| I was mad at the tank for a while and let it sit, also letting the glassfish become calm again. I'd been throwing around all sorts of ideas for the tank but after all that trauma I decided to go back to basics with a guppy tank. It was a one hour project, including draining probably 95% of the water, major clean up, collecting plants from other tanks, and adding the fish. So I thought I'd share a before & after pic: edit: the rocks were collected outside my apartment building, should I add more? And any other suggestions or ideas are welcome Last edited by Theresa_M at 16-Jun-2005 08:41 Last edited by Theresa_M at 24-Jun-2005 09:54 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

I'd leave it simple and clean like you have it for now, I love the look of the rocks. Grab some more and build up on the left hand side. Use silicone as you feel necessary to keep them from falling. I'd be a little worried about them trapping the warmer water from the heater but with the filter placed there I think you'll be okay...and the heater could always be nudged more center if it's a problem. Rocks get algae it seems and if you're up for it I'd suggest giving them a scrub down as it happens. I love the color they have now and would hate to see it altered. The hornwort looks good right where it is ...if you can get it to stay there ...I think it ofsets the weight of the rocks with the light needles. ^_^
The life, the love, You die to heal. I love it One more suggestion: I think I would move the rock with the hole in it to the right corner to give the tank some more balance - you could even have it diaganolly in the corner - just as long as it offsets the large rocks on the left side. i think doing this would give it a nice "rule of thirds" feel, and would open up some of the foreground to more planting. |

Moving it to the back will put it on the same plane as the other rocks and may make the tank too back heavy (visually). Moving it to the front will trap "white space" behind it ....I'm hesitant to suggest adding any more plants, but possible something tall and flat (thinking val like) behind the circular hole...... Oh...and forgot to mention it before....background please !. ^_^
The life, the love, You die to heal. The hope that starts, The broken hearts... I would completly remove the rock with the hole, and replace it with a smaller rock of the same type as the two existing ones. Maybe a litle more to the left. See if you also can find some very small rocks again same type and spread them at the ba A few small plants scattered inbetween these small rocks would also help. I would also consider the folowing. A tall plant at the rear of the rocks to hide the heater. Also paint the rear of the tank black. I also got seven regular small rocks that are maybe a shade lighter. They're kind of rough as opposed to smooth river pebbles. Removing the rock with the hole isn't a problem. Should I put the third rock in the right corner or with the other three? Regardless of where I put the rock I'll need some sort of plants for the back...should I go with all of one type or maybe two? Any recommendations? What sort of plants would you recommend to hide the heater? The space there is small, would a plant be affected being so close to a heater? ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

Added the third large rock, and smaller rocks in ~3 sizes. I like the fact that they're a bit lighter in color. Rearranged the plants and I ordered three giant hygro for the back. I'm thinking a black background ??? edit: the white showing on the filter is a sponge so my fry don't get sucked in, I'll have to play around with that Theresa_M attached this image: Last edited by Theresa_M at 24-Jun-2005 09:54 ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |
