I'm preparing a 5ft 300L tank and it will be heavily planted. I've noticed alot of planted tanks done by "pro's" have painted black backgrounds. Has anyone here done this and what did you use (paints/colours etc.)

Are you refering to the back/outside of the rear glass painted? If so it is just a good quality flat black water based paint.

Just paint the back (outside) of your tank with black paint.

The most important thing about any paint it must be a quality brand name. It could require at least two coats, also make sure the glass is clean, metho is ideal for doing this. Lightly cut back with steel wool between coats to give a better bonding between coats.

Hi James,

I would srongly recomend you use acrylic black matt paint, if you use a regular water based paint any splash of water will make it run, acrylic paint is also water based but once dry it creates this plastic like film that in any case it's easy to remove with a credit card or a cardboard knife.

Good luck

Thanks for that, I think I'll go Matt Black. I think Gloss would be too distracting.
Cheers, James.
