New 42G tank and thinking of getting 6 corys. For variety I would like to get 3 albinos and 3 bronze corys and hope they would all school together. (seeing they are essentially the same family)

Is it likely or do they actually realize they are coloured differently to each other?

Would it be less likely if I mixed the albino and peppered variety (being slightly different families)?

Welcome to Fish Profiles.

All Corydoras catfish are in the same family; they're actually all in the same genus. These are very social fish, and love hanging out in large groups. However, they greatly prefer groups of their own species (and color variation) to mixed shoals, though that seems contrary to their nature. Cories basically shoal by sight; even though albino cories and bronze cories are all the same species (Corydoras aeneus), they will only shoal if there aren't enough fish to form seperate groups.

Most of the folks on this site recommend six cories per species shoal; I agree with this number. As such, I'd recommend at least six albino cories and six bronze for that tank, to provide the variety you wanted. The fish will all be happy and active, and you'll be able to watch two different colors of Corydoras. It's a win-win scenario.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

I have alot of Corydoras in the same tank & the Bronze & Albino hang around together nearly all the time, buy the Albino are more active when the tank lights are on & they zoom around all the time.

I have a 125 gallon tank with a variety of corries and other bottom feeders in it. (Corries=Hasbrosus, metae, Agazzi, Albino, Skunk(?), fry, Clown Loaches, Albino BN) And as crazy as it sounds they all school together...and we won't talk about supper time:%)then we are talking about an insane rush to the supper bowl, well the place where supper area I've even noticed that the fry are getting into the action these days, so I wouldn't worry about 3 and 3 schooling, you just might not have fry Be sure to feed them Hikari Algae Tablets, and Blood Worms, then the party will be on:%)

Thanks for all the responses - interesting. Maybe I will start off with 6 of the one type and see how it goes and add more later.

Tanks is setup but has no fish at the moment so I am going to add slowly.

May look at some cardinals and harlequins next up.

Yes, it's better to start with 6 of the same species. They will school together & later on you can add 6 more.
Harlequins & Cardinals are very interesting fish aswell.

That's exactly why the albino Corydoras aeneus are my favourite

My albino and bronze cories all hang together
