my ghosts are just fine in my 55 right now and will be until they are almost 10 inches long. they often play with each other and even my small black moores. i can reach in the tank and "pet" both ghosts and the moores. if you think that two ghost interfere. how in the world would they ever breed. besides the filter, heater, and powerhead emit more of an electrical signature than the fish

You can't have ONE BGK in a 55 gallon tank, for the same reason you can't have a clown loach on a 55 gallon tank. They get too big. BGKs can get about 20 inches long! That is wider, and taller, than any 55 gallon tank. They re just too big. Clown loaches can get at least a foot long, and they are big, heavy fish. Plus, since they are schooling, they like to be kept in groups. Simply too big for a 55 gallon. Clown loaches are caught as a food fish in their native country. That tells you something about how big they can get.

They shade the glow of it with their mossy-misty costumes,
They wear masks of silk, porcelain, brass, and silver,
So as not to mislead with their own, ordinary faces.

to see a 6 inch BGK go to 7 inch in a month would be abnormal let alone jump to 20 inches overnight before i can upgrade my god you act like i am keeping a 14 inch oscar in a 5 gal tank. there is absolutely nothing wrong with my ghosts being in a 55 together until they reach 10 or 11 inches long they still won't be as long as the shortest sid eof glass. jeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

i never mention any kind of loach either

I MAY BE NEW TO THIS SITE BUT GUESS WHAT KIDDIES THAT ISN'T BECAUSE I AM JUST NOW OLD ENOUGH TO USE A COMPUTER. TO GIVE YOU SOME KIND OF IDEA. I HAVE BEEN IN THE MILITARY OVER 11 YEARS, MARRIED AND DIVORCED TWICE, BEEN STATIONED ALL AROUND THE WORLD. I HAVE HUNTED IN GERMANY, FISHED IN AUSTRALIA, AND EVEN SWAM IN THE RED SEA. I HAVE HELD IN MY HANDS AND SMELLED AND TASTED THINGS MOST OF YOU WILL NEVER EVEN SEE. TO THINK THAT A PERSON LIKE MYSELF WOULD RISK THE HEALTH OF A PET FISH BY OVERSTOCKING MY TANK UPSETS ME. DO YOU EVEN HAVE OR HAVE YOU EVER KEPT BGK'S? WHEN YOU GO TO THE STORE TO BY FISH DO THEY HAVE ONLY ONE FISH IN 300 GALLONS OF WATER? NO! ARE THE FISH HEALTHY? USUALLY! ARE THEY EVER UNHEALTHY BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF TANK THEY ARE IN? NO! JJJJJJJJJEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZZZZZZZZZEEEEEEEEE

okay now that i've calmed down i wanted tell you victim that bgk don't use "sonar" they use electrical sensory like the flat head catfish. they sense the electrical charge from their surroundings. "sonar" like what bats use, is the high pitched, inaudible to humans sound they send out to bounce off objects and they use the returning signal to tell where they are and what kind of food or other objects are in their immediate surroundings. thanks for looking at my edits and you are correct they can live in hardness up to 15 but not 20 and the prefered is around 10 they also like a neutral ph around 6.7 to 6.9 ph the profile says up to 8.0 and that is just way too high for this fish

Why can't u just use the edit button instead of posting 4 times in a row?

Vic obviously knew what the BGKs use to guide themselves and used sonar as a generic term. Don't jump down people's throats.

They shouldn't have been soo jumpy at u, and I understand where u r coming from.

I have kept BGKs before, and do not think that a 6 inch fish would be hurt in a 55 gallon tank, provided that u upgrade as it grows.

I have never kept 2 BGKs in the same tank before, so I choose not to comment on it.

BGKs are awesome fish and very rewarding to keep.

i have a 55 with two 6 inch BGK's they are very cool fish but i am new to this site and i was looking at the profile for BGK's and alot of the information on there i believe to be incorrect and/or inaccurate. please look at the edits i have submitted, look at your favorite research site, and let me know if i need to change my research site to one a little more reliable. i am using Dr.s Foster and Smith and have been for years on everything from dogs to reptiles. they have never given me any info that was incorrect to my knowledge. anyway let me know what you think esp. if you're a BGK guru like i believe myself to be

i guess i was just in a rant. next time i'll use the edit feature.

i wasn't sending a blast at vic just letting him know and vic has actually given me some very sound information and advice infact vic i have another post needing help on some ideas for a patriotic theme with small cichlids if you'd care to comment

i have read many posts in several forums i am constantly reading about overstocking and such. when the truth is told you will be just fine as long as you stay to the general rule that you should have about one inch of fish to one gallon in your tank and that the length of the longest fish does not exceed the shortest side of glass

janna you are invited to refrain from commenting on any of my posts i now that you may but please feel free to not as you won't hurt my feelings

I have a 13" pleco in my 55 gallon tank.

I was watching him, and he wanted to turn around.

WHen he turned around, he maby used 5" of the tank WIDTH to circle around.

I would say a 16" BGK (which is the size they usually get) should be able to turn around in a 55 gallon tank, since they are pretty flexible.

you're right vic and to tell you the truth the bgk's i have aren't supposed to get any bigger than 12 to 14 inches.

they are farm raised and through selective breeding over the last 4 years they (the farm) claim to have produced a small strain of smaller ghosts. thats what the pro said but hell who knows i guess we'll see won't we in about 8 more inches

Lets try something new people.

Give a site newbie the benefit of the doubt.

He wasnt asking whether his 2 BGK's are going to be okay, he was asking you to look at the edits he proposed to the profile. Most of the edits have already been processed but judging by the details of changes he was asking for makes me believe he has a fair idea of what he is doing. I'm sure when the time comes he will make other arrangements for the BGK's, and if it does look like they are going to cause each other damage he will make other arrangements.

Attacking people the way you did is a good way to scare new members away.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

I've kept mine in a 40 cube for almost a yr now. In that time he has gone from about 3 inches to about 6 or 7 inches. I'm not worried at all about him having enough room anytime soon. For several reason.
1. The slow growth rate they have.
2. The shape of this particular tank gives him plenty of room to move around in (18 inches deep)
3. The manner that thees fish swim.

They rarely swim in a perfect vertical line. Actually the most common way I see him swimming is horizontal with his head up to the top of the tank (feeding time).

I know he isn't stunted, because I doubt very seriously a BGK will live after stunting.

Stunting is something that only very hearty fish can handle.

I'm not saying he can not stunt, I'm simply saying that he would most luckily die shortly there after.
