I have a tank with eco-complete and I can't seem to keep a cory alive. My tank is an S.A. setup with long living otos, rummys, cards, plecos, but when I put a cory in there it doesn't seem to live more than a month or two. I'm trying to fiqure it out. The only thing I can think of is the temp which is kept at 82-83F or this might sound strange, but I have alot of Malaysian driftwood that my plecos break into tiny tiny pieces on the substrate. Is it possible that the corys are ingesting this and it's killing them?

It's gotta the tiny driftwood pieces over my substrate.
My corys are probably ingesting it and it's causing problems.

Anyone else heard of this problem?

My tanks is 100% Sand with some Bogwood.
1) How long have they been in the tank with that substrate. 1 year.

2) What type of cories do you have, if you know the species. Bronze, Albino & Leopard.

Mostly eco complete on the top but 50/50 ec and black sand. I have pandas and julii. The pandas have been in the tank for 11months. The juli were in the other tank on medium gravel for a few months and are now in with the pandas. No barbel problems yet.

I used to keep my peppered cories with sharp pea type gravel. They were in there for about 4 years and I never had a problem with their barbels.

I don't like to tempt fate, though, so when I moved, I put the cories in with rounded and blunt pea type gravel.

Thanks BigGee. Have you had them a long time?

If that's true than it's not the temp. I haven't been able to fiqure it out, but since they are a bottom feeder and these pieces of driftwood are defintely on the substrate I'm starting to think it's being ingested and causing problems.

I have had pandas in EcoComplete for over a year and I currently have Sterbai in my discus tank. Al;though the Sterbais are expensive, they have the ability to withstand the 82F+ temps for discus.

This poll is for people who have cories with good, robust, full length barbels.

Please answer what kind of substrate you have your in the tank(s) with your cories, along with these questions. Copy/Paste if you would like:

1) How long have they been in the tank with that substrate.

2) What type of cories do you have, if you know the species.

Note: Go with the substrate that is on top - the one the cories have contact with.

Refrain from using Blended/Other if you have "mainly" a particular type at the top - use one of those options and explain.

Pea gravel substrate

1) How long have they been in the tank with that substrate. 1yr.

2) What type of cories do you have, if you know the species. Albino cories, Three Lined cories, Panda cories

I agree with Books, I find high nitrates every time I notice a loss in barbel length or a fin looking a bit ragged. I do a 20% water change every week but when I notice barbel erosion I vac very thourghly under driftwood, rocks & under my plants even. I do not have heavily planted tanks yet.

I'm curious to see if anyone sees a potential problem with substrate. I think it is overrated.

1) How long have they been in the tank with that substrate.
Three years, give or take.

2) What type of cories do you have, if you know the species.
I've had Aeneas, Arcuatus, Trilineatus, and Habrosus in there - the Habrosus weren't in more than 4 months though.

Fluorite, since the new polls don't show your vote.

No barbel problems at all. There are two Aeneas I'm still working on catching (ARGH!) who have about the longest barbels I've ever seen on a cory, 2cm+ for the front pair.

I have had my Peppered Cories(Corydoras paleatus) for about 15 months. I've had them in with a sand substrate the entire time. I've never had a problem.

I've had anaeus, pygmaeus, pandas and S&P since Aug/sept in "natural" pea gravel. All doing well

Flourite is the sharp stuff, right? My gravel isn't small or rounded, but is fairly large and pointy. My cories have nice big barbels though, so the substrate isn't a problem. I think that the whole "sharp gravel is bad for cories" thing is a myth. Nitrates are the only things that 'cut' down cory barbels, if you ask me.

Before I forget, my longnosed cories have been in the tank for two, two and a half months, while my habrosus have been there for about one and a half months. I have had no problems with short cory barbels.
