yuppers, the tank they are in in those pics is in no way deep enough.

Actually I do have an aro tank, and a bigger tropical pond on the way, I was thinking about a huge bagrid or something, but that plec looked spectacular.I could do with something that would handle the algae in a 4000 gal pond lit by sunlight. That plec looked like he could do it practically on his own

"Regardless of identity though, those Plecs would need truly colossal quarters to be happy. Both the big LDA65 and the Acanthicus would need a minimum of 500 gallons to themselves, and preferably a LOT more. An aquarium that would keep those fishes happy in surroundings resembling their native waters would be, no mistake, a civil engineering project similar to the 'mega tank' described elsewhere on this Board. But I can think of quite a few people who would have a LOT of fun putting together a 20 foot aquarium for these big boys to share with some Pims and Arowanas. Now that would be some Amazon biotope aquarium ... "

I concur

That's likely because most exports of acanthicus are mislabeled as adonis, regardless of species. A. hystrix is more widespread and grows to a noticeably larger size. Though Armbruster claims that all acanthicus species reach at least 36" in length, the latest CLOFFSCA seems to state otherwise. From what I've been told, adult adonis actually bear some assemblage of reticulation/ more e to heavy spotting on the caudal peduncle and are in fact quite rare in the hobby.

The second one was actually a adonis. They were for sale by the owner of the site. They were both 35". The adonis was 750$ I think.

I looked at the second of those big Plecs and my first thought was "Wow, looks like Ted Derrick's old Acanthicus adonis ..."

At that size, though, how do you tell adonis and hystrix apart? I gather they're pretty similar looking once they're adult. And both reach three feet.

First is LDA 65, better known as panaque sp. "titanic", easily one of the largest of the genus, and the second is acanthicus hystrix, probably the largest known loricariid thus discovered.

Ipressive creatures, thats for sure. Who knows what kind of monsters are still undiscovered...

On a side note, the biggest pleco I saw at the Shedd was about a foot long, at most. I had high hopes of seeing bigger ones. Do you think they have larger ones that are just elusive?

Yeah those are pretty darn big. Does anyone happen to know what kind they are? I don't think I even saw any that big when I went to the Shed Aqurium in Chicago.....most plecos are good at hiding though too......
