Both species of adonis plecos can grow HUGE-over a yard long in the wild. Other large species include megalancistrus sp. as well as other species from the genus pseudacanthicus.

I think large plecos are the stuff nightmares are made of!! I just gave a 7 inch (give or take an inch) Rhino Plec a new home (he was playing tail baseball with my Panda Corys and killing them) and quite frankly I loved him but am glad he is gone. Big ol' Plecs give me the creeps. Kind of like those eely/snakey type fish do......eeeewwwwwwwwwww

This belongs to a local Aqu. I am not sure of his size other than he is big. I hope this helps you.

A fish store about an hour from me has several huge plecos species unknown. In 2 of their 55g tanks they have plecos that look to be about half the length of the tank. There is no possible way they can turn around and just sit there on the rocks.

Oh yes. Genus Acanthicus.

These things can reach a metre in length.

Note that - A METRE in length.

Now think of the size of aquarium a full sized adult will need.

The late Ted Derrick from my local aquarist society had an Acanthicus adonis. It was so big that when he took it to shows, it needed FOUR people to lift the show tank, and another two to lift the fish and put it in.

His specimen topped out at around 30 inches. And weighed something like 15 Kg. And it was VERY spiny. Amazing Plec, but you'd need a truly colossal aquarium to house one. Ted Derrick's specimen lived in an aquarium that doubled as a swimming pool for small children

Hystrix tend to be the species which seems to grow larger. This being said, there have, at least to the extent of my knowledge, been no reports of either species reacing a meter in length in the last ten or so years...damn human activity.

I have a fairly large plec but the biggest i have ever seen was in a hotel in Athens it was about 18 inches long, with 5 fully grown oscars and a couple of fair sized clown loaches.Tank was about 10 feet long and 2 ft high.

Gibson SG you know you want one!!
