My bristlenose eats brown diatom algae, and whenever I see a store tank containing Ancistrus there is no diatom algae in sight. Are you sure that you really need a pleco, though? Your water quality will actually go down a bit if you introduce any type of pleco, because the fish will be excreting waste and (in the case of an algae eater) consuming nutrient-using algae. If your tank is already about fully stocked, I'd recommend against a plec. What is your tank size and stocking list, please? |

To get the brown algae there must be a problem it would be better to solve the problem rather than add another fish. More info about your tank please size, water peramiters, plants, and a full stock list, also the filtration used. I also have a 20 gal. with the same problem but it has: 5 guppies 6 cories 1 platy 3 ghost shrimp same water just this is vacuumed out every two weeks. The bristle nose is for the bigger of my tanks and i was thinking about the stingray pleco (p. Leveree i think) for the smaller. I have a few plants but i don't know what their called. They can become very protective of their young, and can quite possibly kill tankmates in small setups. Bristlenose plecos tend to be bottom dwellers like the kribs, so the two parties may have problems with each other if breeding occurs (pleco trying to eat eggs; parents defending young against plec). Aside from that, it would be good to catch up on your tank maintenance if you've gotten behind. Plecos are messy fish; you don't want to pollute the tank even more. What is the genus name of the "stingray pleco"? I'm not familiar with the name, so I won't be of any help right now. |

Now since Otocinclus are about as inofensive a fish as you can possibly imagine (unless they're desperately starving and go for slime coat) then I'd echo Sirbooks' caution with a Britlenose Plec. Chances are a Bristlenose would develop a taste for caviar if the Kribs began breeding, and the Kribs would behave in true protective parental Cichlid fashion and rip it to pieces. Remember that when they're breeding, Kribs can become a LOT more aggressive than they are outside breeding time. Non-breeding Kribs can be relatively placid, but parents can be fearless defenders of eggs and fry. ![]() |
