I have been thinking of putting a clown loach in my 10 g fry tank to eat the pest snails. I have 2 week old guppy fry. Do they search out and destroy fry or are they relatively safe?

correct me if i am wrong, but even a fish that isnt aggresive will often eat fry and eggs of its own or other species. it is the natural order for big to eat small...my south american cat is peacfull and doesnt bother anything, but if there is some live bearer fry in the tank you can consider it eaten at nightfall.

anyway, wait for one of the experts on loaches to respond to know for sure

clowns are great for getting rid of snails. but in a 10g? sorry even still young and small, that way to small. and they should be kept with at least a minimum of 3 i have heard

Fish tanks are an expensive addiction

Ok, somosne correct me if I am wrong, but fish don't eat other fish or eggs becaue they are really agressive, they eat them because they are a food source. I guess technically they don't know any better. If they find something they think they like they will eat it, thats really all there is to it.

Try to put the CL in your 10 gal. tank when you have no fry. The CL will eat all the snails within a few days.

they are generally peaceful...but it will have a go at your guppy fry for sure..its a food source for the CL afterall...anyway, what are you going to do after the clown kills all of the snails?10 gallon is way too small for a clown loach...and you need to have at least 3 or more to make him really happy..

I have a small CL in my 11G Betta Tank for that purpose while I am still adding plants. I dont think they will worry about the fry but they will eat any eggs that others are protecting.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

Yup, fry and eggs are much better seperated from community settings, sometimes even algae eaters will enjoy an opportunistic meal of other fish eggs.

Mouthbrooders and a few killies etc will not eat their own fry, but with most species its just not worth the risk.
