Man! I ran into one of those sirbrooks, and only for $7.99 for a 4 inch specimen. I shoulda grabbed it instead for waiting till the next day, darn thing was gone!

Now that's surprisingly cute for a Bristlenose Sirbooks ...

Didn't expect to find myslef saying that, but yes, it's quite a neat fish ...

Trouble is, all the mud brown ones with huge masses of 'things' sticking out of the face tend to look grotesque to me, whereas that black one with the white spots and the fin edges looks more like a Gold Nugget Plec than a typical Bristlenose.

Must look out for dolichopterus on my travels ...

Yeah, I think that's pretty much it. I've seen them in one store here, but they were charging about $13 for fish that were less than an inch/three cm long. They are nice fish, but I'd rather get one with some size to it.

Sirbooks - that looks like a smaller & cuter version of Peppermint Bristlenose, which incidentally is the only one of the few bristlenose species available here that I find remotely attractive. Alas I'm not prepared to pay upwards of $40 for one.

Compelling or attractive?

If you do actually like that Ancistrus, you will have to appreciate [link=this]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/221_F.PHP" style="COLOR: #808080[/link] species.

The wonderful irony here is that I, who in the past has declared himself to be given the shudders by Bristlenoses, finds this one compelling to look at for some reason ...

Looking on a stock list for a lfs I came across "Calico Bristlenose". I cant find anything about them on the net. Its probably a new one added to our import list (lots being added atm) and the wholesaler made up a name for it.

Any clues on what it is? I havent had a chance to get to the shop yet, and I have not heard back from the lfs either on what the sci name is.

We have them around here, and we call them the Piebald Ancistrus.

Its a shame they cost so much over there Lindy. They are very prevalent here in my area. About a dozen of us have bred the heck out of those over the past couple years, and they sell very quickly. The price around here though, is only about $15 each. I do remember when I paid about $45 each for the first small 6 I got.

Dan, I would be interested to know.

Kitten, I think thats mostly the problem. Thats what the wholesaler labels them as so it must be corect.

Meh, I just wish they'd get ONE name down right. My LFS (bless their heart) labels the fish by what the wholesaler labels them. Well, the wholesaler is the one who keeps getting the stupid names wrong! My cory ambiacus was labelled as cory agasszi, which isn't even a correctly spelled name, never mind that it's not even the right fish! Bah... it's stupid. ]:|

I dont find it a very attractive fish either Cory. They will start showing up more and more for sale here though if they are as easy to breed as a common bn.

dan, I think that wholesalers will be making those errors alot until they are familiar with what is coming in to them. I'm half tempted to special order a plec just to see what I get instead!

That Calico Bristlenose is on of the ugliest catfish I've seen. I'd pay more for a Common Bristlenose than that thing.

I worked it out with a guy from a local forum. We believe this fish to be [link=http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/275_f.php]http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/ancistru/275_f.php" style="COLOR: #004040[/link]
I'm not buying them for $90! Was just curious what they were.

Probably some kind of man-made color morph. It could be made up of multiple species, as some human-produced Ancistrus types are. The calico bristlenose is probably just an Ancistrus sp. then.
