Hello All,

My son has a 20gl tank with Julii corrys and Tiger Barbs. The corrys never come out into the open except at night. I suspect that the Tiger Barbs are harassing them. He asked if I want to put them into my community tank that has 9 Panda of various ages. My question is this - will the Jullis 'come out of their shell', be more active and socialize with the Pandas or are they too traumatized?

Thanks

Eric

They will probably be happier with the tiger barbs being gone, and they should hang out with the pandas at least occasionally. How many of the Corydoras "julii" (in the vast majority of cases they are really C. trilineatus) do you have? They may just be shy because there are few of them. Corydoras are very social fish especially within their own species. If there are only a few in the tiger barb tank, simply adding more may help make them more outgoing.

I agree they certainly would be a lot happier without the Tiger Barbs. You could change the Tiger Barbs with a far more peacefull fish.

i have the exact same setup in my tank(provided those are true julii corys and not false leapord), barbs and corys. they get along very well together. if i may ask, how big of school are the barbs in? is there plenty of foliage and caves for the corys? is there also lots of open swimming room on the bottom?

i have a school of 8 barbs. if barbs are kept in a group of less than six, they WILL pick on other fish, even agreeable ones. i had a school of three when i started setting up my 10 gallon...they annoyed my lone bronze cory constantly, she was a good sport though...after the school size became six, they were too busy playing tag with themselves to bother any of the other occupants.

the school of corys doesnt seem to matter the type or size if they are common temperment....if they are all the same temperment they will school...my bronze schools with my 3 juliis...however my two spotted corys are very docile, they hide...they arent being picked on, they just dont school with any of the other fish. they are starving themselves and scaring me, i finally got them to eat last night.

the general idea is, if your son has too few hiding spots or barbs, adjust it and see if they come out more. if conditions are good, try the juliis with the pandas...even the spotteds that dont school with the rest of my corys seem to enjoy the julii's company...

Remove them from the Barbs & put them with the Panda Corydoras, they'll be 100% more happy & more active.

For now, move them. They'll be a LOT happier with your Pandas. And if you have nine Pandas, that's a nice social groups for the julii/trilineatus (or whatever they are) to join. If the spotted Corys are 6 or more in number, you'll end up with a non-stop Cory comedy riot in your own aquarium once they start playing with each other

By the way, how many Tiger Barbs are in the other aquarium? If he has a decent sized shoal (and in 20 gallons I can't imagine space being a problem unless he's got something ridiculous like 40 of them in there) then their picking on the Corys puzzles me a bit.
