I have noticed two extra KLs in the Betta tank. How do I know easy they have a totally different markings. I have two types of totally markings some are a all browinish colour while the otheres are a wide yellow and brown stripes. The new ones have a darker fine markings.

Now here is the question I did not buy them with those markings as if I did I certainly would have known. If they did not breed how did they get there. Is it possible they have changed their markings. Also they are smaller and thinner that all the others as if they are young.

They are always very active climbing in and out of all the plants and at feding time they never stop hunting for the food.

I believe that kuhlis can change color, but not to the extent you're seeing. If they are not as long as all the others, then it sounds very likely that your loaches successfully bred. Can you tell if there are more kuhlis now than you started with?

Kuhliis will breed in an aquarium if conditions are to their liking. The trouble with kuhliis (and many other loaches for that matter) is determining which conditions they like that induce spawning so that the fishes can be spawned intentionally. With quite a few loaches, I gather it's still something of a mystery what is required.

Do a 'head count', and if you have more than you started with, they've bred. In which case, you've definitely been looking after that aquarium very well indeed! Congratulations!

I gather that commercial breeders use hormone induction to breed Kuhliis for the trade. Alternatively, in places such as Singapore, they can be left to their own devices in a pond, and the young periodically harvested. I'm told that temperature fluctuations that mimic seasonal changes have an effect upon loaches (and may induce spawning in some species), but if your aquarium has been at a fairly ocnstant temperature over a period of months, then this won't apply.

Mind you, even in a small aquarium, doing a 'head count' with Kuhliis probably involves serious dismantling of the furnishings ...

To do a head count that I will put in the impossible basket. I do seem to have at least two more. I have just seen a larger one with the same banding and I know I did not buy them with that banding.
I know I did buy some with basically no banding at all they were a very pale brown maybe they were in shock as they had not long been at the LFS
I will just wait and see what happens in the future.

Maybe try putting some worms or other small live food right in the front of the tank to see if you can get all four out at the same time?

I would not be surprised if they did spawn. Kuhlis are one of the few loaches that has been spawned on a regular basis in captivity, and they will also spawn in community tanks if they are well taken care of.
