Yep....I got a "Butterfly Bristlenose" from the LFS, really a long finned bristlenose....it is just tiny, about 1.5" minus the tail so I'm not too sure of sex. It is awfully cute, the pic is bad and really doesn't do it justice. I am excited because this is the first plec I've had in years.

I think "it" is a boy, there are 2 little bristles that are just starting to pop out on the "nose." I would get a pic if I had a better cam

This is exciting, I may even pick up a mate for him sometime.

$100!!!! oh you poor unfortunate souls!

I paid $12 CAD for him, about $9 USD.

He has settled into the tank now and spends hours cleaning everything. I love plecs.

It looks like a female to me, especially if the bristls are only on the nose. The best way to distinguish between male and female Ancistrus is by the location of the bristles, not whether they are there or not.

Female bristlenoses will have bristles, but only on the "lips". Males on the other hand, will have bristles on the snout as well, not just on the outer edge of the lips.

Here is a picture of one of my female L182s, which has fairly large bristles.

How large is your 182? In my working experience with them, females have nearly no bristles. At such a small size as your plec obviously is, males will not have their rostral cutaneous processes filled in yet, though those processes surrounding the mouth area with already be fairly well developed. Some males don't even obtain rostral processes; well oxygenated water is reputed to shrink rostral action, among other things. Some attribute this to dominance, but I highly doubt this claim myself. Then again, said fish has only the beginnings of odontodal action, so I dunno.

wow, cool plec Tryst.

mmm, none of my 3 bristle-nosed plecs have bristles.
But 2 of them are still only small. I can't see any on the larger one though.

It's about three inches long right now. I have another (female) L182 the same size, but she has smaller bristles than the other one. I figure it's just an individual type characteristic...
