I'm sorry, I didnt end up getting there.
I was actually thinking maybe calling them to see if they can give us a name for the fish until someone can get there with a camera.

Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Largest catfish I've seen "in the flesh" is a Redtail. Liverpool Museum had one prior to its refit that was truly massive ... the texts say that these catfishes max out at 44 inches, but this one exceeded that by a good margin. This one looked to me as if it was definitely hitting five feet in length! Furthermore, one of Practical Fishkeeping magazine's writers has returned from an Amazonian expedition, in which he cited seeing a Redtail that would have been just shy of six feet had someone not lopped its head off prior to selling it in the fish market for the locals to eat!

Among the other 'Big Cats' I've seen include the Pangasius (although not at anywhere near full size). I'll have to pay another visit to Chester Zoo and see if they've added any big Catfishes to their collection recently. I know they had fully grown Sucking Loaches (otherwise known as CAEs) which were awesome to behold if the only ones you've seen beforehand are the juveniles in the shops, a fairly chunky Lung Fish and a truly monstrous Electric Eel among their big fishes, but surprisingly very few of the 'Big Pims' or big Mekong River species.

At least in my area, we get in pangoon shark catfish and another, stout, unidentified species as misnomers for p. hypopt.

Cali, just to update you on scientific names, Pangasius sutchi is now P. hypophthalmus.

Cup, then what are they nowadays?

I'm pretty sure that Pangasius hypophthalmus is the most common "iridescent shark". At least, it is the most common one in the United States; and in this day and age. I can't speak for the "iridescent sharks" of years past, of course.

"Iridescent Shark" has been used for several Pangasius catfishes, most notably Pangasius sutchi, for some time as a common name.

Pangasius Catfishes reach a metre in lenght with ease. Some will exceed this by a fairly healthy margin.

However, if the fish you've seen is indeed the second one of those links, namely Pangasianodon gigas, the Giant Mekong Catfish, then as Shini says, it has a LOT of growing to do. 10 feet of catfish has to be seen to be believed. And a full size Giant Mekong Catfish will be heavy enough (around 300 Kilos) to need a small fork lift truck to lift it!

That is one of the few fishes that would pose a predation threat to an adult Pacu. So if it IS the Giant Mekong Catfish, I hope they rehouse the Pacu before the catfish gets too big, otherwise the Pacu will end its days as lunch for the catfish. And, given the size of the Pacu you're talking about, that will give you some idea of what a monster the Giant Mekong Catfish is.

Mind you, the one I want to see full size is Siluris glanis, the European Wels. This easily reaches 10 feet, and some sources claim it is capable of reaching nearly 5 metres (15 feet!), though I suspect this is an exaggeration. Even so, a fully grown Siluris glanis would be an awesome sight.

Hey ppl's

I went to the aquarium in st.kilda, Victoria today and when i walked in i was amazed to see a huge tank with some sort of catfish in it, which was well over 100cms long!! It was the biggest fish in captivity that i have ever seen!

I was hoping that someone else has seen this fish and could tell me what it is!

Thx

I bet it was an ID shark - that look, but a whole lot more common.

Woah, fish number 2 is quite a hefty one indeed. The Mekong Giant Catfish can reach over 10 feet long! On top of that, they are a critically endangered species. For a fish like that to be in an aquarium is quite surprising.
