I have fed Ottos flake, frozen Formula Two food by Ocean Nutrition..Hikari Algae wafers and Sinking Wafers..Bloodworms..frozen Cichlid Chow..heck all kinds of stuff. You can drop some in different parts of the tank , at the same time..so they all get a fair chance. I've had Ottos suck on Pearl Gouramies with wounds..and on an African Butterfly fish that was perfectly fine. They are funny little guys.

talking about ottos sucking on other fish... is this common? I noticed one of mine following around a zebra danio, obviously had little chance of catching it, but neither were really moving, just cruising, the otto followed him back and forth, up and down for a good couple of mins untill he eventually gave up and had a suck on the glass

There are a lot of greedy fishes out there

And MTS too, take a look at this pic (yes, that's a wafer under that pileup!):

There are a lot of greedy fishes out there! Mine do the same. It's mainly the platys too!

My Otocinclus will definitely come and hunt down pieces of Hikari wafer. But mine have the Panda Corys to compete with. So, I break my tablets into pieces, and position the pieces strategically using an old piece of undergravel filter uplift tube. That way, my Pandas have to engage in a bit of hunting to find them all, and my Otocinclus stand a chance of getting a share.

Oh, and something else my Otocinclus like for some bizarre reason, when I administer it to the aquarium, is freeze dried Tubifex worms - they like it even more than the Panda Corys!

I have 5 corys, 5 kuhli loaches, 2 bala sharks and 2 ottos (unfortunatley 3 ottos have died over the past few months). I feed flake food when I get home from work and drop 3-4 sinking wafers by hikari in the tank before I go to bed. Seems to work well for me.

What I've found with my Oto's is that if I don't see them (they're hiding in their cave) then they're getting enough to eat. Mine will eat algae wafers and the bottom feeder wafers, but I really don't know how much because most of their activity is at night.

I have found my ottos only liked to eat the algae off of the glass, rocks, etc. They never liked the wafers. They do such a good job on the tank that they run out of food. I find I needed to move them from tank to tank so they don't starve.

Gang,

2 days ago, I acquired 10 Otos and split those 5 each for my 20G and my 29G. They went to work right away. Today, I decided to supplement their diet with Hikari Algae Wavers and dropped 2 in each tank.

Well, that didn’t work as planned though.

In the 29G, my 10 platies split into 2 groups and started to eat the wavers. During their feeding frenzy, one Oto dared to come close and after they did not give him any piece of the waver he started to suck the slime of their skin]:|. I had to separate the group. All other Otos did not seem to be interested.

In the 20G, my 2 platies and 12 harlequin rasboras (espei) started to eat the wavers while the Otos didn’t even notice them.

In both tanks, I fed the fish some flakes first to distract them while I dropped the wavers in.

Now, what am I supposed to do? Drop them in when the lights are off already?
I am afraid I will face the same issues when I attempt to feed some nice veggies.
How can I make sure that the Otos get their share of the treats, and not only the fish slime?

I never had bottom feeders before, so forgive me if my questions seem silly.

Thanks,

Ingo

Our ottos don't have any problems at all finding the food. They eat wafers, cucumber, and will even occassionally suck on a bloodworm...this is in a tank full of dojo loaches! I must have got the feisty ones of the bunch

Thank you all for your input

I will try the "break them and feed at night method." At least I will not see the fights that break out .

Thanks again, I will keep you posted,

Ingo

PS: GFG - thank you so much for your comment regarding my 125G. You will have even more fun once I start my log about it (soooooooon).

Littlefish, don't overfeed with the wafers. As Therese said take one piece and break apart at lights out.

I tried the same in my Betta tank and they just left it alone. I had to remove it next day. I have never seen them eat any thing other than the algae naturally on the DW and a few plants.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

My mollies eat the wafers as well but they rarely finish them and the Pleco or False FLying fox eventually get a look in.

I also feed another type of wafer by JBL, called Novo tab which distracts the other fish away from the Wafers. The clown loaches pick them up and swim around the tank trying to get some peace it is very entertaining!

GFG

Ps- Little Fish I am really enjoying your 125G threads! am learning alot to, and you ve got me planning all sorts of things!!!

Sorry all laughing aside, I have similar problems when feeding my guys make sure the "other" guys get plenty to eat, and drop in more than just 2 wafers try adding up to 5 yes that is a bunch but then the otos will get some and the other piggies will have their share, i find i tend to over feed a bit to make sure everyone get's their fair share...I don't know what it is about the Hikari Algae Wafers but they definately seem to be good to everyone, maybe i should try them and see
