Alex, a true SAE is a good thing.
SAE's are the peaceful guys that will continue to munch algae. The others when mature stop eating algae and become nasty.

i think flying foxes can be i.d with a larger yellow stripe than the CAE and i think it is one of the few that will have whiskers.

Flying foxes, IMO, are far more attractive than the other two species. IME, they aren't all that aggressive. Kept in a 75 gallon tank with other similarly robust fish, I've never had a problem with them. Actually, I've seen SAEs squabble with other fish moreso than the foxes.

Yes, that is the same fish as I have!
i was also sold him as a Flying Fox.
It appears he is the species
Osteochilus Vittatus - the bony lipped barb.
Mine has never shown aggression, not even with platys.
How long have you had yours and how big is he?

Hello

I have one of these fish - I love him dearly but he is pretty agressive with the platy (who i always imagine to be kinda stupid so I do understand)

I think its like Sneaky Pete 's fish? When i bought it it was called a false flying fox.

any offers

goldfishgeek attached this image:

Actually, I saw an SAE that was like that.
It was actually missing both the pectoral fins!
I wouldnt be surprised if your guy is the same, Maybe not born with them, or may have lost them when he was a young fry.

I wish fish scientist peoples would give names to these fishys we have no name for! would make it so much easier than just going around with all these "flying fox" "false SAE" and such names!

If I were to name my fish, i would call him a "Lipstick Cyprinid"

Sneaky,
maybe I'll try to get a pic later. Actually I used to have 2 - one jumped , the other was pestering it quite constantly.

He shot upto about 5" and then stopped and just got a LOT fatter. If you look at the fins of mine and yours, you will see they are almost identical in shape and even have the same number of rays.

I must admit I don't like mine. Quite drab, too big, very messy. it'll eat just about anything. But knows what a net looks like and dives for cover whenever he see's it, making him impossible to catch.

EDIT: Just noticed one striking difference - the pelvic fins on yours are right under the gills, mine are further down almost in the middle of it's belly

Bernard,
I cant believe how much yours has changed!
Aside from like 1 fish I have, none of my fish have changed much at all since they were little.
Does yours love zucchini as much as mine does?
How long have you had yours and how big is it?
I wonder if they are just very slow growing, mine grew rapidly for about 4 months, then slowed down and hasnt grown much at all.
They really remind me a lot of rainbow sharks in their growth pattern.
Anyway, Foxx is one of my fave fish, and I could never bear to part with him/her. Great fish with tons of character.
Oh and hehehe at the fish walking up and down in a short skirt with a handbag swinging its hips
thats very similar to what I thought when I heard the name.
Sheesh these common names!

Sneaky,

The pic I posted is about 6 months old. Fish has changed a lot, much plumper and much more red in the fins. It now looks remarkably similar to yours (especially in the second pic) body and fin wise. The fin shapes and coloration are identical. But the head is different.Mine has a noticeable suker mouth as weel as the 2 pairs of barbels.

I was told by a local dealer here that one of the reasons why false SAE's were hard to name is that there are actually quite a few of them. This kind of barb is quite common in Asia and there are some minor variations depending on which region they are found in.

I would guess our fish are different variations of the same /similar species.

Sneaky Pete, is your fish the one that was once known in the old Innes book as Osteocheilus vittatus perchance?

Only I think those 'lipstick' red lips may be a pointer to this. I'll have to check the book and see. If I can remember in which cardboard box I packed it before storing it away for the house rewiring

Actually, upon some research I have discovered that my fish is actually this species:
Paracrossochilus vittatus
I dont think your fish is the same, unless it has changed a lot. Mine has looked like this since I bought it, when it was about 2/3 of an inch long, about 3 years ago.
I guess he is now 3 inches, because he is smaller than my largest male bolivian ram, who is 4 inches without the tail.

Bernard,
the fish in your picture is not the same fish as mine.
Not at all.
This makes the situation even more mysterious!!
Perhaps I have an unknown fish?
Here is some more really good pics, with great lighting where his/her true colors show through.
My fish is kind of a tan color with a pale golden stripe above the black, and has a bright yellowy/white belly.
He also has 2 pairs of whiskers under his mouth, which is like an sae's mouth, but has red "lips", the top of his eye is red, and so is the top and bottom rays on the tail fin, and the first ray on the pectoral fins as well.

hey sneaky pete,
i only have a 29 gallon, and i only bought 2 SAE because of size issue.

i currently have 4 med angels, a small clown pleco, and the small common pleco. the tank seems fine right now but yeah i know the common pleco is going to become a problem, so when i do decide whether i want 3 ottos or 1 more SAE i will trade in the common pleco, reason for ottos is because they will clean the glass, and i dont think my clown does that, nor the SAE.

Sneaky,

"Foxy Lady Catfish"!!! (Can you believe that one?).

What's it do swim up and down the tank in a short skirt swinging a handbag

I recognised the pic as I ended up with one by mistake. Mixed in with true SAE's. Still have it, unfortunately. It is very peaceful, but he does annoy spawning fish, gets imopatient for the egg snack. He's gotten too big and fat and is a poo machine which is the thing I really dislike.
Tried to take him out but impossible to net in my tank (too many plants and hiding places). I've tried sneaking up on him at night but he sleeps in a tight corner impossible to get to.

Here's a pic of when he was younger. Doubled in size since then and has since got a light reddish tint on the fins (which is a real giveaway for i.d.) - I noticed yours had the same.
