I have a 20g tank, Tiger Barbs, would love to add a few otos down the road. I read the article in the archives here, and it stressed the importance of having a planted tank. All I have are plastics in my tank now, with no intention of having live plants (right now). I see where the author used bog wood, and soaked some wood in a separate glass tank by a window to develop algae prior to adding the otos. Would that be a suitable way to have otos, without live plants?

without live plants wouldnt really be the best way to go. First, live plants do wonders for keeping your toxicans in check, and they will often grow alage on their leaves which is a food source for the otos.

And otos would really benefit from having cover when it comes to live plants.

If you are planning to growalgae on the side, than that might work with food but it isnt always going to work. Certainly no sunlight no food. But algae waffers will work as well.

Bottom line is it can work, but they would really do better with live plants.

Ottos and live plants in my opinion must go together. The natural algae is their best food, also live plants always help a tank to keep a better water balance.
I also think they prefer a heavly planted tank, with a mix of different types/textures of leaves also DW and rocks.
For some reason mine have just stated breeding I have just posted some photos of the tank they are in.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
