Last night I lured my pleco out with some zuccuni into a soft blue light so i could get a good look at her.

I had been duped. before I bought her(or him) i didnt know a whole lot about fish, so i took the LFS guys word that it was a bristlenose pleco that would only get 4.5" or so.

well, i got her under some light, and it isnt looking good...she or he looks more like a common pleco that will possibly grow to 18"....not good for my 29 gallon...he or she is only about 2.25" at the moment, but with the brown coloring, the markings, and the lack of bristles on the nose...im a bit worried

At that size a male BN would/should have a good set of bristles but if it is a FM the bristles are extremly small if any at all.

Let it say there for a while and you should get a better idea of what exactly it is.

Have a look in [link=My Profile]http://

I think thats a little small to try and judge it yet. Remember that BN is just a common name and there are many species that are called that.

As greenmonkey stated, there are several species of bushynose plecos. All of them, the males get bristles or bushys. However, several of them, the females don't get any thing at all, not even stubs. Also, some of the species, you may not see bristles on a male at that size either. The ones that get about 6-8 inches, the males usually don't start to develope any until they are about 3-4 inches long. Just keep an eye on it, as you will be able to tell soon.

i will see if i can get a picture at some point, but i cant make any garuntees...in order to get a good enough pic to identify her, i will have to turn on the tank light.

even when i bribe her with zuchini, she hides when i turn the light on, even if she doesnt hide, she wont sit still while the light is on...

i will do my best though!

woohooo!!!! definatly not a common one, i got a good look at her tonight, she or he tucked him/herself by the filter tube and stayed there while the tank light was on, long enough for me to get a good luck and snap two pics. the one outlined in red in the bottom right corner is a top view of her, quite blurry, but the side shot came out better after i adjusted the shutter speed.

pleco of some sort

Looks like a bushynose to me, low slope of the nose. And, it appears, in the large pic, that there are some little stubbles on the nose.

whew! next to my south american cat,she is my favorite, and even then i like the other cat more just cause i can see him, he doesnt hide as much

i would have taken her back soon if she was a common pleco that would get big for fear he/she would get too big and i would have to trade her to a friend i am already attached to it even though i hardly see her,lol
