Over the last 10 days they have managed to move an area of approx 8ins x 6-7ins x1ins as seen by the photo.

Recently I thought the cave was not high enough for them so I raised the roof by 1&1/2 ins by putting a small rock on top of one of the supporting rocks.

Next water change I will be moving all this extra sub base they moved.

I removed three cups full of the base today

I dont think that is a pictus cat.

If im not mistaken, keith made a post about that specific catifish somewhere

EDIT** Hoplo Catfish ??

(it might be a different name for a pictus.. since i have never had one)

Sorry you loose this time it is the smaller of the pictus I have.

The Hoplo is a darker colour and has small wiskers.

My large clowns regularly clear an area of sand all the way back to the glass, i keep having to put the sand back.
It is mostly caused by there huge tails that when they accelerate they stir up quite a sand storm.

I watched them after the last water change for some time after the water settled down. Even with the removal of the three cups of base, their cave roof is approx 2-3ins above the base it varies higher at the front. This cave goes right through to the back of the tank. When they swim through they still swim on their sides. I think they have started to remove more out.

sorry, are you saying that the CL's pushed out the gravel from their cave? And you believe that it's because there wasn't enough room for them to get into the cave, or swim around it?

Thats pretty smart for the CL's! Could there be any buried food under there? I often see mine digging - however this entails the CL's moving one bit of gravel at a time - not a whole bunch of the stuff!!

The only way there could be food there, they would have to take it back there.

They are fed at least 4ft from that area and the curent runs from their cave end to the feeding end.

That is why I am eliminating the food. Also if it was food they would have been doing it ever since they went into that tank.

I have been watching today and I think they have started to move more out. That is within 24hrs of me removing the 3 cup fulls of the sub base

Maybe, just maybe you could be lucky and they preparing to breed. I have read that they have been bred once before and, if I remember correctly, it was caused by a raise in temperature and then adding cold water the next day and while you have added the cold water you put the temp back to norm. I think that is right.

You may want to give it a try, may not, it all up to you.

Clown loaches will move substrate. I used to give mine a pebble to play with/. Since the tank was black gravel they would immediately notice a piece of white gravel thrown in. They would actually pick it up and run around the tank with it. The one that had it would eventually drop it and it would be snatched up by another. Another way to provoke their ability to pick out objects that don't belong is to change the color/type of gravel so that what is in their caves is not the same as what is outside of the caves. If I put white gravel in the caves they would move all of it out.

This is not breeding behavoir for clown loaches.

Empty chairs at empty tables, the room silent, forlorn.

More Update

I raised the cave ceiling by 1/2 inch but this is not enough. I will remove the main supports and replace it with one bigger rock. I have been watching them very closely they are fanning the gravel with their front lower fins to move the gravel forward. I have also seen them pick up small round pebbles and carry them around the tank.
