Hi all.
I have a 1.5" - 2" BN that has no bristles yet. At what size do bristles start growing?

I know females have less. Maybe it's female?

My Bristlenose had some tiny bristles when I got him, he was about 1 inch long. He now is 1 1/2 inches (in just 2 weeks a half inch of growth! ), but I have heard that some females may not get any bristles at all, or it may take them a very very long time to grow bristles. Also, You may have a different species of Ancistrus Pleco, which may not grow bristles, but may stay small.
My guess is though that its a female. You could easily go out and pick a similar sized male now, it would be easy to tell a male!

Often female bristlenoses don't grow bristles, it might be female. On the other hand, some BNs don't grow their bristles until they reach around two inches, so you really can't know for sure.

At two ins it should be showing signs of bristles if it is a male if not it could be a female.

If you particularly want a male you will have to buy a bigger one and see the wiskers your self.

It depends on the species of BN.

Thanks everybody. I'll keep a look out for some bristles as it is slightly smaller than 2". Hopefully it is female so I can easily pick out a male. I also need to ask my LFS what type of bristlenose it is (tank just said bristlenose).
