1) coz corys are one of the most widely available catfishes in lfs's the world over
2) there are heaps of loricariids available to any aquarists
3) both corys are famous for their inquisitive, gentle, shoaling, expressive, colourful, 'all-rounder' characteristics
4) plecos are known for their wide-variety in colour, size, aptitude, cost, and rarity
5) last but DEFINITELY not least, corys and plecos are both bottom-feeding fish, thas why their in this forum

Because they're simply great little fishies to have. Petey, my rubbernose pleco is my fav, fish. He couldn't be a more perfect fish. Unless he ate snails, that I'd love to see.

These catfish are so addicting, which is why everyone loves them! They are peaceful for the most part, many of them are good tank cleaners, and they are good-looking to boot. Cories and plecos are my favorite catfish, and my favorite fish overall. Also, they are available to any new hobbyist, and pretty easy to keep. As such, many newbies buy these fish, and get hooked. I know I did. With so many cory and pleco owners, it is no wonder that they are discussed in online forums so much.

Umm... if you're tired of seeing stuff about corys you may have to.. oh I don't know... close you're eyes when you click on this forum? People like corys, dude.

Yes, there is a lot of cory talk going on in here, but they are a very popular group of fish. They're peaceful, active and pretty and fairly easy to find at LFSs. They've been in the hobby for a relatively short amount of time, so naturally there is still a lot to learn about them.

On top of that, what other main groups of popular and abundant bottom feeders are out there besides corys and plecos? Loaches. That's about it.

Don't be so down on corys, they're not so bad

When I first put cories in my tank, I had put them in there just to be vacuums. Boy did that change shortly after they were in the tank. I dubbed them, The Three Stooges and easily identified Lary, Curley and Moe by markings on their dorsal fins. They were truly hilarious to watch. I packed the tank with too many fake plants during those days and they became shy with time. Now they hide much of the day, but I suppose they feel much like they do in nature.

Why are you obsessed with clown loaches??

Everyone has their "thing" that they really like, just like you do, it really doesn't matter WHY does it? Why do some people like coke but some like pepsi? Why do some people like to vacation in Cancun, while others like taking cruises to Alaska?

What a boring world this would be if everyone liked the same things.

If you are so tired of reading about them do not click on the threads it is as simple as that...not trying to be rude but come on!

It's probably because... well, for lots of reasons.

How many readily available bottom feeders ARE there besides cories? Lots of people don't like shrimp or they aren't available in their area. People often wind up getting cories as "vacuums" and then fall in love with their antics. Thus, a "necessity" becomes something more like entertainment.

Cories ARE one of the more entertaining fish around... it's like watching a comedy routine. There's beautiful fish and friendly fish and personable fish... but how many truly hilarious fish are there? Besides... lots of us are caught by that first wink... And despite not being terribly colorful for the the most part, the patterns they come in are varied. And some of us still harbor a passion for things spotted.

As for plecos, I think the same sort of thing happens. You get one as an algae eater (whether or not you have algae, you get one because people tell you you NEED one) and pop it in your tank. I know I'm exceedingly fascinated by how they scoot along the glass and over the tank. I mean, really, how many animals on earth can get around just fine with nothing other than their mouth? Oh, they can swim (and it's grand fun to watch that, especially the big plecs), but I remember watching my BN chomp his way over a piece of driftwood and try to get in every crevice. His tail was swishing as he tried to get every single bit of algae off of it... It was just the cutest thing.

And again, plecos of all shapes and sizes are really one of the most readily available algae eaters. You can find algae eating shrimp, CAEs, etc, but still, THE most readily available algae eater you're most likely to find is none other than your common plec. Most of us here know that they grow to astronomical sizes and really don't belong in a tank, but LFSs tell us they can. "Oh, they'll only get to four inches or the size of the tank." My mom kept fish years ago and when I started my own tank, I knew pleco = algae eater. I also knew I didn't want the 12 inch monsters we had previous in my tank! Though I loved them dearly, they were just HUGE. I'd never seen a CAE, SAE or anything like that previously, so I did my research and found other algae eaters besides the commons. However, I know MY love of plecos came from our two plecos years ago.

All in all, I guess what makes them so well beloved is that the basic functions they provide (bottom feeder, algae eater) are pretty specialized fields, but they do so much more than simply their "jobs". They do so with an aura of playfullnes or cuteness or something that truly intrigues us. I've spent hours watching cories frolic, or plecos "kiss" their way across the tank...

That's not to say that my other fish aren't fascinating in their own ways, but I've never seen my betta girls frolic with all the haphazard energy of a cory or my guppies fascinate me simply by the way they move around the tank. Each fish has it's own appeal. Some are just more appealing than others. *shrugs*

And the reason that you hear so much about these two types of fish is simply because we've all had them at some point. And as the phrase goes, to know them is to love them. Sure, some people aren't as fascinated with them, but seriously... how can you resist them? Okay, I know it's possible to resist, but still... If you don't want to hear about them, ignore the posts that contain them? Not terribly difficult, really... I don't give a fig about cichlids, so I don't go into that forum. No big. *shrugs*

Edit: Sorry for the novel!

Personal preferences, that's all. As far as bottom feeders, my favorites are loaches, followed by plecs, then cories, but I like them all.

Well heres my 2 cents. Corys(most) are a smallish fish. Everyone and their brother "recommend" them for their tanks. This is prolly because alot of us do not own "large" tanks, so to speak. Good cleanup, funny fish(as I had some before but not now). As for the plecs, some peeps are right(they buy for algea). But as you "learn" most plecs get too big for AQUARIUM, and if they DONT they are usually not good algea eaters. My favorite all time fish I owned was my GIBBICEPS(spotted), and had to sell at 8" due to tank size. Catfish RULE IMO, even though I am a Syno freak, let the CORY kids play and speak. Gotta remember Cory's and Plecs need love also. LONG LIVE CATFISH.

"Everbody"

That is a very big statement. I am not, so in that case I must not be "Normal" Oh now what is normal.

I would say a large number of menbers have them and it becomes a common topic.

Though I love them, loricariids have as much personality as a rock.

One of the reasons Corydoras attract so many fans (and a fair amount of obsession) is because they are wonderful 'personality' fishes, as well as being attractive from an aesthetic standpoint. Likewise, the large number of Loricariids have their fans because they are wonderfully diverse and interesting to collect.

Likewise, I suspect the Loach fans could wax lyrical about their babies too! And I would happily let them, not least because sometimes, when they do, they introduce me to new species I've not encountered before.

Revel in your fish obsession, whatever it is! And share the joy!
