they were being sold in a *big box pet store* as "flying fox". i know for a fact that they are not flying fox because i used to own several many years ago, and they don't have the characteristic yellow stripe above the black band, as well as not being red enough (although it's obvious they are still on the juvenile side so they could slightly change color in the future). anyway, they were very very cheap so i picked up a couple. just hoping for a positive ID:

They could be. It's hard to tell, they're pretty young. Much more elongated than my SAE, also mine doesn't have the two yellow spots on the tail. They also look kind of washed out and translucent, probably because they're still growing and a bit stressed from being at the LFS. Last, they look like they have a bit more of a downturned mouth than the true SAE.

I would say yes as the litle dark line is in the tail as if it is continuing from the main body dark line.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Looks like it to me, but they are a bit on the slender side so it is throwing the proportions out. based on colouring then I'd day they are.

Sorry Mate but IMO they are not True Sae's . I have 5 ...I got them very young and the stripe was very visable going right to the V of the rear fin . From what I can see these finish short making them False Sae's

I thought that the false ones had a stripe that was not on the caudal fin at all?

the first pic i posted shows the best example of the stripe going all the way through the back fin. the other pics were the best ones that came out from the ones i took. the lighting in those pics was difficult to compensate for

Watch for the black body stripe becoming more prominently extended into the caudal fin as they grow. BY the time they're adult, the black stripe should extend into the caudal fin, and this should be prominently visible. On my adult specimens the black stripe extends into the caudal fin VERY visibly, to the point where I can see it while watching the fish from 6 feet away.
