i was hoping to use the featherfin to be my first fish in my new tank. but some sites say these cats are pretty territorial with other tank mates. so i was hoping to put a featherfin with a spotted african perch. will these guys work or is there a better tank mate for the featherfin?

btw its a 20usg

It would be too small a tank for a featherfin.

Way too small. Try a 75-100 gallon.

Synodontis euruptus would be fine in a 35 gallon tank, as they only grow to 5-6" and spend a lot of the time in their favorite hiding place.

for a featherfin syno i would go for a tank with at least a 36''x 15'' base. my featherfin is in with 2 blue acaras, a firemouth, an angel and a false asain bumblebee cat. i have never seen him being aggresive at all and nor is he picked on because the cichlids do their thing and featherfin hides in a cave and comes out for feeding and the BB cat ignores him as well

Uh, yeah, except they get larger than five inches. In the wild, they reach twice that size, and in the home aquarium, probably up to 8"; I've raised ones that definitely grew past 6".

Yeah, my LFS has ones of 8 inches but they don`t usually get over 6 inches. I ain`t saying they can`t get over 6 inches but in home aquaria they rarely do

To make sure everyone is measuring the same, in aquaria, you only measure from the tip of the nose/mouth to base of tail (cadule peduncle (spelling??)) which is standard length. My Syno Eupterus is about 6.5 inches by that measurement. However, if you measure from nose/mouth to END of tail (total length) my syno eupterus is about 10 inches!!!

Anyway, S. Eupterus usually stay in one spot and usually come out for food then go back. AWESOME looking fish, but 20G is too small.

They are peaceful, but can hold their own. Mine was with Malawi cichlids, but is now with tangayikans.

I always measure using standard length, but I know that a few people on here don't which makes it really confusing...

I personally have never seen a S. euruptus over 6.5" standard length, and we have one that big in a 100 gallon display tank at the LFS where I work, but I suppose they can get bigger...

I've got mine in a 55 gallon. All books, etc that I read say a 30 gallon will do fine.

I had three of these fish in a 180g tank with african cichlids for 3 years. The smallest one was around 6" but the other two were closer to 10". (excluding tail)

One might be okay in a 30g. No more than that though.
