because they felt like it.

literally.

The clown loaches in my tanks sleep all throughout the tanks, also, they might of found more hiding places.

I have a clown loach that is wierd, like his colors are horrible, and he stays to himself, but he is healthy, and thats all that really matters to me.

Like victimization said, they felt like moving...why do you sometimes sleep in a different place? because you feel like it...I know if I had the room my clown loaches do to choose where to sleep I would sleep in different places each night I have 4 of the silly guys myself, one sleeps in with the metaes, 1 with the adult albino corries, and the other two up near the driftwood together or by the bubble stones...aren't they just plain wonderfully goofy? You gotta love themnot to mention that they love the snails

You have not stated how old or how big the Clowns are.

My large Clowns basically stay in the one location while the others (I just do not know) where they go day or night.

I think they could be trying to establish their own areas.
Is the space they now have sufficient for all of them?

I believe over time clowns change "houses". One of mine is too fat to sleep in a cave in a rock in my fishie tank, so he's moved to a bigger cave. A new chap I got, prefers to sleep on top of the filter, belly facing the glass and gives me quite a fright, eventho I have 19 of these boys, I can still get frightened. When some of my boys were smaller, 5 of them wld squeeze into a small igloo shaped shell and sleep in it. Wen I was taking the shell out, one clown, would simply not get out of it. I had to yank him out.

13 of my boys sleep in one teeny weeny cement house, and 2 sleep in a drift wood.

Once in a while, I will see a stray clown here or there, sleeping like a lost soul (guess they know how to worry you)

Although, I have a clown loach that will not change homes no matter what. A while ago I noticed that my CL was having trouble getting in and out of his hidey hole because of his size so I spent 40 bucks on a new and bigger home with larger spaces inside and bigger holes to enter and exit. He still goes in the small one!
