As many as will fit in the tank, as with all schoolers. Of course, they may take some time to adjust to your tank and start being really open, but I'd say 6 (if you can fit 6 12"+ fish, of course!) is a good number. Three'll cut it, more is always appreciated.

at the moment the tank has just been rplanted so there isnt really many places to hide. could that be affecting them to? they always hide behind the filter and heater. are they fine with BNs???

Clown loaches will do fine with bn plecos, as neither fish is aggressive. Some more hiding spaces for the tank will help, and eventually the clowns will be more outgoing.

To start off whith. What size is you tank My 5ft tank has 7 "see My Profile" also my tank is just one large area of hiding areas, Hollow logs and caves everwhere.

Here is one of the main caves note there are several smaller ones in that area. The larg one has two sections as well.

with clowns it is definitley a case of the more the merrier,i have 8 ranging in size from large to small and they all school together and play,i have plenty of hiding spaces as well for there more relaxed moments.however a large tank is needed,so if you buy them small a 4ft tank would do for a couple of years but then you will be in the look out for a bigger tank .

Gibson SG you know you want one!!

3 is the minimum number of clowns you should get.

they will be nippy with each other, because they are fighting over pecking order.

you will see them play more with 6, but as they get 8" you cant have many in a smaller tank (55 gallon)

fish no not grow to the size of their tank. (they will die before they do)
get them out of the 2ft asap into the 3ft, but if you don't plan on getting them a 6ft tank in the future, they will be better of back at the LFS.

Fish grow to the size of the tank, yes.

When they do that though, they are stunted, which means that their internal organs keep growing, while their body doesnt. To put it nicely, pretty soon there wolnt be enough room for everything inside, and you get the rest.

While this is happening, they will probably be miserable, and be very painfull to them

Hello,
We also have three in one of our tanks, they are the most cheeky fish! VERY outgoing and willing to come and see you once they are settled in. Ours love a slice of cucumber and will strip it down to the skin within an hour.

I am interested in the concept of stunting though, I am very aware of fish growing to a point and then they stop. Goldfish being the most abused of this treatment IMO.
However I struggle to find any scientific evidence of the damage it causes, for example organs growing even after the fish length and width has stopped increasing. Has anyone got any links to organisations that have done research in this area? I find it interesting that the fish has a mechanism that apparently stops its growth when its space is limited. What is this mechanism called and how does it work I wonder.. .

any input would be appreciated.

Thanks!
