I have a fish that is either a common pleco or a BN. if it is a common pleco im going to return it. Are there any distinguishing traits that i could use to identify this fish?

Hi,
Here is the picture, description, and information about
the BN catfish:

http://www.aquatic-hobbyist.com/profiles/freshwater/catfish/bristlenose.html

Here is the picture, etc, of the common plecostomus:

The bristlenose prefers darker backgrounds and gravel and
likes to chew on driftwood.

To begin with a BN is a specific pleco

As for distinguishing them, I know that my BN (though I have albino) seem to have had a smoother body. They won't get as large as a "common pleco". And I know when the male hits sexual maturity he will develop bristles on and around his mouth opening, and I never noticed that on my previous common plecos, though I may have had females

I know the bn's aren't as rough on plants, as my common plecos were, but that may be too late

hope some of that helps, heidi

The BN is a pleco, but it is smaller and more suitable for smaller tanks.

If it has Bristles on his face, then it's a BN Pleco.
