My clown loach was recently ill but appears to be on the mend now, coming out in the early mornings to ask for food. However this is the only time he comes out of his tiny little hole. It probably lasts between 7.20-7.30am. Literally, he seems to spend the rest of his time in this ridiculously small hidey hole. i have even provided him with a bigger hidey hole so he would be able to move around a bit but he doesn't ever go in there.

Granted, I don't know what his activity is like between 12am and 6.30am but I doubt its too much. I did see him out of his hole this morning at 7.22am and he was looking particularly chubby. I guess this is a result of his laziness.

Any suggestions for why this is happening and how to snap him out of it?

Do you have any other clown loaches in with it? They're social fish, and need to spend quality time with fish of the same species. If they can't, then (as with other loaches and with Callichthyid catfish) they often become reclusive and hide away a lot. Some buddies would definitely help if that is the problem.

If it does have pals, then you might just have an introvert loach. They have varying personalities and one loach will differ from the next in behavior. Though they usually are very social fish, an odd one will prefer to spend time alone.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

When my four baby clowns 1ins+ they used to hide in a crack in a rock.

Try feeding him different foods to build him up. Is there any other fish that is anoying him causing this behaviour or does he like being by himself?

How many Clowns do you have or does he require more company?

Here is my food listing it is in my Profile.

he used to have a few friends but over time they passed on. he had been quite active after that but i guess he might be getting a bit bored now. i might go on the hunt for some new CL's.

thanks for the adive. I knew they were social fish but it never occured to me that this might be why he is so shy at the moment. ta.
