I have had Hoplos for several years they can vary from very shy to real camera poses and always out.

They seem to like all foods especialy the Frozen Blood Worms.

I have two that would be close to 5ins

To be honest I have not hopped in and askerd him/her.

Actually I have know idea how to sex them at all. All I know he was extremly shy until the large RTBS recently died.

I used to own a couple of hoples few years back, and they were one of the most active fish in my tank. The minute i sat down in front of the tank to 'fish-watch', he would be the first one out to greeet me It even got to a stage where during feeding times, i would normally feed them frozen bloodworms, so i would put my hand in the tank whilst holding the frozen cube of worms, and he would come up to my hand and eat from it! hahahahha they're an awesome species of catfish to keep if you have the space for it! Minimum tank would be 3ft.

Sexing is easier in adults. The pectoral fins of males develope a nice orange colour, and have some miniature "spikes" on them...much like what you see in many male specimens of the Loricariidae family (ie plecos). Females lack these pectoral fin characteristics, and have a much rounder/fuller body.
