They are similar-looking and closely related catfish, and because most people don't seem to give a crap about catfish, they don't care if they get the name exactly right. I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash. |

Fish_lover Fish Addict Posts: 742 Kudos: 176 Votes: 0 Registered: 14-Nov-2001 | Hm, from my understanding, Porthole catfish refers to the species Dianema longibarbis, due to the horizontally spaced-out row of spots along their body. The only other species in this Dianema genus, is Dianema urostriata, and its common name is Flag-tailed Catfish, due to the black-white colour pattern on its caudal fin. Hoplo catfish refers to general species of the genus Megalechis and/or Hoplosternum. P: In the Corydoras genus, there is a flat-tailed cory, scientific name being Corydoras robinae. It shares the similar colour pattern of the flag-tailed catfish (D. urostriata), but belongs to a separate genus. Perhaps we should all just stick to scientific names...? |
