I bought each of these BNs early last summer. They're each in the 4" range now. Lfs employee sexed them for me (1M, 1F) but now that they're older and reading some information lately I think that might be wrong.

These pics were taken last month...do I actually have two males?

I'd say two males. And might I say, that second one is absolutely the most gorgeous BN I've ever seen.

MMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Yes I would say you have two males there. Do they get on fine or do the scuffle a bit? I find that happens a lot when you go to the shops and ask for 1 male and 1 female you either come back and find later you have 2 females or 2 males.

When I bought #1 I was told it was female They're in separate tanks so it's not a big deal. Except maybe to my spouse, that's his favorite fish who he calls (called, I guess ) 'Miss P'

It's funny because when I got into this hobby/addiction I had an ewww-yuck attitude about plecs but now they're one of my favorite fish

If you ever want to breed them you know to look for a female. Then she will have two males to choose from.

No comment re sex as it all ready done. I will say they both look very healthy. I would suggest at least two FMs otherwise one male is going to be very lonely.

Fantastic photos well done.

I just wanted to stick my head in this thread and tell you about two of my BN females.

I have seen a few types of bristle noses, and they all look a little different. Shannen has a red spotted bristle nose and it is a female with real short bristles around the mouth and up the nose a little.

My two females have longer bristles like the second pic that you posted. They are not forked bristles like the males get.

In my opinion, the first picture could very well be a female.....Here are some pics of mine.....

The female...

I'm fairly new to the hobby but I thought I had read that females don't have bristle down the middle of the head only around the edge of the mouth.

It has been my experience that when you are first trying to sex the baby bristle noses that this is the first way to be able to tell male from female....I mean as far as the females only having bristles around the edges of their mouths and the males having them up their nose area but as they get real old, the females grow a lot smaller ones on their noses in comparison to the males as my pics show. And in some types of the bristle noses the females don't really get any at all. So you can't really apply that rule to every single type of bristle nose. But... the world may never know. HaHa.

I thought I'd heard something like that as well, I think that's what got me curious about these two.

Nice plecs though
