They get about 4-9' long (depending on the species), and they are voracious predators.

I'm not your neighbor, you Bakersfield trash.

Fish Chat 27/03/98 -- Tiger Shovelnose Catfish - One of the larger shovelnose catfish that has found its way into the homes of catfish lovers. This fish originates from northern and eastern South American fresh waters. Its' natural habitat includes river channels, lakes, flooded forest and rapid streams. This catfish has a large compressed head with the width of the mouth about equal to half the width of the head. This species can grow up to about 90cm, unlike its distant cousin, Pseudoplatystoma Tigrinum, the "Caparari" or Tiger Shovelnose Catfish grows larger, up to 1.3 metres or greater and weights 20 kg in the wild. Note that these large catfish can sometimes go on a hunger strike, especially after shifting tanks / habitat, up to a few weeks. They prefer a hiding place in some cave or dense vegetation. Most catfishes are nocturnal, meaning they only become "alive" after sun sets (something like the infamous vampire, except that they can't turn into bats ..... just as well they are fish).
I've a pair of these species that stay very still at the bottom of the tank, when night falls, one can hear the "agitation" on the water surface, it's just the night fishes doing their hunting. Their snout are like vacuum cleaner, they "suck in" fishes, one will hardly notice any jaw chewing movement, as if the prey gets digested immediately. Take note that these fishes are quite fidgety, easily agitated on slight movement in tank and will go berserk, knocking down decos in tank. Their appetite are enormous. Diets include live fishes, small cichlids as well as freshwater crabs in the wild. In the tank, they fancy live fishes more than shrimps.
This Week's article is dedicated to Matthew Lim, the author of "I am a Red Devil" football column, a very good friend of mine whose birthday falls on today and also happens to purchase this Species today. Happy reading.

Do not get the tiger shovel nose cat if you don't have a 100 gallon tank or bigger. There whiskers get very long and if they are always touching the sides of the tank then they go insane and are known to break the glass.

Most shovelnoses get huge, but not all of them get 4' long... The Lima Shovelnose usually only reaches between a foot and two feet in length. Still a big fish, but it's not 4'.:%)
