best solution would be to isolate the gold nugget in the 10 and use the 55 for the zebras. Just a choice of greater inverstment over lesser investment. You may want to offer the gold nugget to the LFS for store credit!

is that $80 for each or a pair???
for each is still an unbelievable deal, but how you worded it, it looks like $80 a pair

I added a bunch of rock into caves so there's got to be about 8 hiding places plus I'm gonna put in a pvc cave. The gold nugget is only about 3 inches right now so I put him in the 10g with a piece of driftwood and a bunch of plants. He'll go in the 30g within the week. It's been 10days since I last saw any ich in that tank and I've fixed the temperature problem although this summer I'll have to watch it. I didn't realize that room can go past 80 degrees in a few hours. Now to find time to go get and then acclimate the zebras. At least the lfs water is almost identical to mine.

I think it is best to have them in the 55g..just add some hidingplaces..like pvc pipes and they should be fine.

If you also recall, only one pair actively breeds, while also giving chase to other indivduals. Not to mention the fact thateach plec has his own cave... a 30 gallon is an entirely different story from a ten gallon. Zebras are midly territorial towards one another. They'll shove and chase to the extent of the edge of their caves, with the exception of feeding time. Contact between indivudals is rare otherwise (unless, of course, in a small tank such as a ten gallon split amongst three zebras).

I know I'm not gonna leave the gold nugget in the 10g. Not even in the 30 for it's lifespan. I like my gold nugget but ever since I first saw them last year I've wanted zebra plecos. I'm gonna try 2 in the 55g then get them their own tank and depending on the size of that tank and my ability to find more I might get a few more. I thought I read somewhere that gold nuggets were agressive to others but I couldn't remember so I thought I better post first get fish later. I'm still not certain on how aggressive zebras are to each other. I looked up info and found stuff on planetcatfish and web searches of people with 6-7 in a 30g tank breeding them. They've also been in the lfs tank together for 4months and I think are about adult size.

Those crazy kids.

Ten gallons is way too small for either/any species of gold nugget pleco. As has been said, they do get rather large. Sham, why not get just two zebras, or maybe only one? I wouldn't risk them with the gold nugget, and you don't want to have $125 fish duking it out with each other, either.

Gold nuggets, while medium pace growers, reach a good 10+" in length, which means even a 30 gallon wont cut it, and especially not a ten, even for a short while.

Alright I'm gonna do some reaquascaping of my 55g for the zebras. Move the gold nugget to the 10g for now and the 30g when I know there are no other problems with it. I also have the 10g when all is done incase the zebras don't get along.

While I'd really like all the zebras it is a fair amount of cash and sounding a bit more complicated. I do plan to get them their own tank in the future I just wanted to get them before someone else did. Can I keep 1 in the 55g with the gold nugget or just 2 in a 10g? Otherwise I will probably just buy 1 for now for the 10g untill I get another tank. I have room to add another 10g which are real cheap here. I also have a 30g but while my 55g has never had a problem and been the perfect tank my 30g is the opposite. I just got done treating it for ich and added another filter and heater. Just not certain it's stability for an expensive fish. I'll have another 10ft of space for a tank whenever I get that guinea pig cage built so I can move them out of the fish room.

I have a chance to get 3 zebra plecos but I'm not sure where to put them. Will they get along with my gold nugget in the 55g or can I keep 3 in a 10g with no other fish?

Can you get your hands on a tank divider? If so, section off the 55 gallon into two parts, each housing one species.

Which is why I'm asking! I don't have room for another tank right now or I would. Otherwise if both those options don't work I will wait, hope they are still there, and find room for their own larger tank.

What's you're point? I covered both situations. Analogously, if I were to have stated; "no, you can't keep them in a 55 gallon", I suppose you would have replied "he said ten gallon ". So, whatever.

"or can I keep 3 in a 10g with no other fish? "

You read the damn post, kthnxbai. Also, since you're apparently at fault, I've appreciate it if you'd not call me crazy (i.e. calling the kettle black, etc.).

Furthermore, gold nuggets are highly intolerant fish and will likely bully, or even kill your zebras, given half the chance. I'd set up a good 15-20 long for them.

Read the post. It said 55 gallon not 10 gallon.
