It was the fish that I thought looked stressed in your pictures. The stress bars were dark and the fish was obviously not eating judging from the subken stomach and sides together with ragged fins. Did the fish exhibit some of the same characteristics when you purchased it? Did you notice if the other discus were pecking or harassing it? __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

A juvenile to me is a fish with a body length of 3 inches or less. Feedings are Tetra Crisps, Tetra Flake, Omega One Color Pellets, frozen blood worms and live black worms. Juvenile fish are like children hungry little poop machines. Having said that, I also feed the adults just as often, the portions are figured the same way - whatever they can eat in 3 to 5 minutes. Note that the frozen bloodworms and live black worms are on the daily schedule, the fish are carnivores and appreciate the treats. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

The good thing is that the newcomers are eating from the 2nd day,so that means they will not die of hunger like my other two did. The newcomers are still black in color but hopefully they will be better in some days. I also noticed that one of my powerheads are making some bad sounds.I took it out and cleaned it but still making sounds and i think that is also one of the problems that might stress the discus or what do you think? ![]() Robby |

The discus included in the background in the second photo looks a little stressed and gaunt. The cichlids will settle down and a new pecking order will be established over the next two weeks. Having 5 fish will diffuse some of the aggression. ![]() __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

No one was pecking or harrasing him at all. The discus experts from another site said he was also stunted and that he has not eaten for weeks. I just hope the other discus is doing better. ![]() Robby |

He has ordered around 30 new various discus and he will get them on monday. He said he will call me then he gets them so i can get there and order the discus i want so he can keep it there until the discus are less stressed. The discus he has is little bit more expencive from the other shop i bought but i think that it's better to buy healthy ones even though they are more expencive. He also has a 177g tank for sale too... ![]() I think i might buy that one later. How often do you think it's best to give my discus frozen blood worms..is once a week ok? ![]() Robby |

If it has died, the contaminants from its decomposing body will stress the other fish more than your search. If he is dead, there will be remains of the fish in the tank. Discus are extremely bony fish so you should find some indication that he has gone to the big fish tank in the sky. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

I have 4 Discus but now the last 3-4 days i can only find 3 Discus. I have been looking and looking but can't find him at all ![]() The discus iam missing is this one ![]() The other three discus are swiming around and eats, but the fourth i think is dead and has been eaten. I havent liftet out the driftwoods and the cave yet because not to stress the discus...but the driftwood i can see there are no discus and the cave is not that big...so you think he has been eaten and will there not be anything leftovers from that 5-7cm discus? ![]() Robby [/font] |

Bob Wesolowski![]() ![]() Mega Fish Posts: 1379 Kudos: 1462 Registered: 14-Oct-2004 ![]() ![]() | Robby, I don't feel that you will have a problem, as I prefer to keep discus in groups of five or more. The larger the group, the more that individual aggression is dispersed among the fish. Some people caution against adding larger discus to a group of small discus. The problems that they have cited are aggression, growth inhibiting hormone and the likelihood of bringing in problems such as parasites or disease. Jack Watley, a well known discus importer and seller in the US, contends that mature discus give off a "growth inhibiting hormone". Due to this hormone, he strongly suggests maintaining discus groups according to their size. Having repeated Watley's position in this post, I mix discus sizes and colors. I have not had a problem with raising immature discus with mature discus. I saw your discus in the photo booth. They have nice shapes but appear a little stressed in the pictures. Your discus have appropriate color for their size. If small discus are extremely colorful, it is highly likely that the breeder or retailer has added steroids to their food. Discus will develop greater and greater color and/or markings as they mature. Generally, maturity is between 15 to 18 months. I peronaly think if Discus are tank bread then they should still be kept at the lower Ph levels. i prefer to keep fish, plants, inverts or coral near there native Ph, KH and GH levels . It all becomes a personal choice as to do you lower or leave the water ph. Personally I do lower my ph because Im old school and beleive that discus are happier in lower ph BUT this is my opinion only. My Ph is around the 8 mark in the tap water, and my discus hate it so I lower the ph with buffers to between 6.5 to 6.8 in my 125g tank and do it with ease. It can be done in bigger community tanks but it takes some practice and patience to maintain the levels. I agree with Bob that the water quality is the main issue and clean water that is at a constant level may it be Ph of 5 or ph of 8.5 doesn't matter its the constant levels that are important. This is even more important if you intend to breed discus, then water consistancy is crucial. Just my 2 cents worth. Hey Neil nice to see you back. Trace ![]() |
