My Question is how do you know when 2 fish have made a pair and at about what size do they A)Pair Up & B) Breed. Thanks for your help. |

They get very protective of an area and will start to clean a spot in the tank where they think it is ok to breed. Discus will be any where from 12 months to 2 years before they are at breeding age for more details read the breeding posting that I wrote. HTH Trace ![]() |

Yes, they will stay away from the others & start cleaning somewhere to breed. When you see this, just move them to another tank, on their own & let them breed there. http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

When breeding, i always leave the pair on their own. (p.s. i never breeded any Discus) http://uk.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/s8xi5heh/my_photos http://www.geocities.com/s8xi5heh/classic_blue.html http://groups.yahoo.com/group/buzaqq/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

Females become gravid about that time but males do not become fetile until they are 18 months old. Size is less important than age when looking at pairs as older fish may have been stunted by environmental factors. They can breed at anytime with typical behavior prior to spawning being: - Close proximity between the fish - Taking over an area of the tank - Cleaning behavior of a spawn site Just prior to spawning, the female will twitch or shimmy to indicate that she is ready. The male will respond with similar movements. At that point, pull up a chair and watch the action. __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |
