i recently saw some lovely discus at my betta importer's shop, but i forgot to ask what they were.

are colours done by breeder with this fish or is there central rules/standards?

anyway, the fish in question was the most vibrant orange with a snow/cream white face, it looked very almost painted, no black or unevenness anywhere (and a suitable pricetag)

What was it?

er, yes, i think it was, but the white was less and the edges were crisp and there was no black in the fins... is that still a melon?

I have to agree, the owner of SLS gets some great fish importered and he knows how to look after them, so all his fish are great value

It was at SLS actually, about 2 months ago. Kev said that people were asking if they were painted they were so 'perfect'

I was busy drooling over other things, but i did spend some time staring at that tank

Melons you say, is that the pattern or the colour or that specific combination of that colour and pattern?

I have no idea really, I just looked up the fist discus site I could find and looked through the strains until one matched what you described.

Melon is the pattern of the pigeon blood based fish. The dark spots in the fins of the fish in the picture are the melannin remnants of the stress bars that all discus have. If the fish at SLS did not have this "peppering" it would described as "clean".
