Well...I don't usually post here, but I have some small experience w/ discus from work.

They are pretty sensitive too all water params that aren't "perfect." At work, we have all our discus in RO tanks to purify the water further. I think they prefer higher temperatures too. They are one of the most sensitive FW fish when it comes to water quality. Basically, if you want to keep them you need to be a stickler when it comes to maintance, etc.

All fish are fairly sensitive to nirates, and discus especially. Most discus keepers d weekly if not bi weekly water changes to keep the WQ on good terms with the fish. IME with discus, they aren't THAT hard to keep, but do like fairly clean and clear water.

Ferret has it in one word "PERFECT", Discus like the water to be clear and no nitrite or ammonia, phosphate and all the others.

I do daily water changes of 30% I use tap water that has been run through carbon for the last 24 hours to take out any imperfections and this also gives the ph time to stablize. (this is for my breeders)

Green Monkey,

Trace emphasizes "PERFECT" water. The key for discus is clean water and stable water parameters. Rising nitrate levels are indicative of deteriorating water conditions.
A good water change regime and proper stocking levels help to keep nitrates in check in the aquarium.
