Unfortunately there isnt widespread captive breeding of these fish, so they will all be wild caught. Make sure you quarantine them well, and acclimate them nice and gently , and they will be superb fish. At least feeding them is no problem. They officially eat pretty much anything as long as its dead or plant related. Mine even eat baby snails, all algae including brown and thread algae, all flakes, all granulated, all frozen foods, and even cockle meats etc, although they wont bother with scale algae unless starving. Try to give them a decent balance though, perhaps aiming for about 40% algae and some reasonable variety other than that. They also get on with just about any fish, they only ever fight amongst their own kind, and even then nothing serious. They dont usually eat aquarium plants but mine did eat java moss once. |

Cost being $3.95 Before you criticize someone walk a mile in their shoes. That way you're a mile away and you have their shoes. |

upikabu Fish Addict Posts: 591 Kudos: 393 Votes: 44 Registered: 08-Jun-2005 | How big are they? I wouldn't pay $12 again for them. They're actually better algae eaters when they're small. Once they get big and fat, they're just lazy. Oh, and make sure they're the real SAEs (horizontal black band goes all the way to the tip of tail in a point), not the false ones (yellow above the black horizontal stripe). LFS usually put them together. Here's an article that tells you how to distinguish them: http://www.thekrib.com/Fish/Algae-Eaters/ -P |

It also depends on their sizes as well Here is a photo of SAE for you. Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Only around a year and a half old. Some of the size estimates in old literature are way off, and before you ask, yes they are the correct species . In case you were wondering about the algae eating ability - I havent scrubbed that mopani for at least 6 months, and its spotless. |
