Recently I was told that this person suddenly had fish dying for no apparent reason.

It took a while to establish the answer it was ants. What they had done was lay Ant Bait Traps around the house. The ant trail was along the top edge of their fish tank. Yes you guessed it the baited ants fell into the water, fish eat them, fish die.

Just a warning when using any type of Ant Bait when you have fish tanks.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

see.. this is exactly why i try to discourage people from feeding cockroaches and insects from around the house to oscars... although "everyone" does it.. moral of the story, insects carry poisons with them, even if they arent dead yet.

good post keith.. hopefully it helps some people out there!

Good thing to keep in mind. Thanks for posting Keith.

First, thanks for the warning Keith. A valuable 'heads up' to keep us on our toes.

Second, I would not discourage people from using insects as food for those fishes that will enjoy eating them. What I would STRONGLY advise, however, is that you know the provenance of your insects before you start!

Ideally, breed your insect fodder from a source generation of parent insects with a known safe provenance. That way, you'll ALWAYS know that your fishes are safe when you feed them their favourite titbits!

If you're breeding cockroaches, for example, the best bet if you're using ones you've found around the home is to breed them for at least four or five generations before you start using them as food, to make sure that the ones you feed are free of any unwanted pesticide residues. Better still, source your insects from a pesticide free zone, or breed an insect species that is commercially sold as food for reptiles - small crickets should make for an entertaining time when fed to large Oscars, for example!

Thanks alot for sharing Keith. I know a guy who raises Beatles & worms, to feed them to his fish & he told me that they have high protein.

What do you think about this?.

Alot of insects are high in protein. That is one of the reasons we feed them bloodworms and such, other than they are incredibly tasty (I wouldn't know personally) and entertaining to eat if they're live. Don't see why beetles would be any exception

Wow seems like a 1 in a million sort of thing. I mean whats the chance that an ant eats poisin, walks by fish tank, falls in, and is eaten thus giving the poisin to the fish. Owner should sue the company for the cost of the fish if theres no warning on the poisin bottle. Yeah pointless lawsuits.

Umm, it's poison If some moron thinks that only ant poison will kill ants, they deserve to not own anything. That's kind of like a warning on a lot of fireworks that says "don't point at face".

There is actually a warning on most fireworks that says not to point it at your face.
