I HATE to lose fish of Any kind that I've raised(not breeding yet) and grown attached to.

I'm extra cautious about providing Maximum support (I run 2 400g power fulters in each of my 55g tanks, etc.)for my "little friends" in all my tanks.

Lately I've been wrestling with heat creeping too high and have lost a few. I use both a digital and old style glass termeter to "verify" each other. The heat in one of my tanks currently has a 3 year old "higher wattage than required"(in my 55g....rated for use in 75g) heater that I suspect is beginning to over, and under heat. I'm going to be setting up a 3rd tank of 125 to 150 gallons soon. Do you guys think having 2 heaters to verify the water is with a constantly appropriate range during light, dark, daytime, nightime periods is a good idea.

If they both lit up in "approximately" the same times, to maintain proper temperature...I'd know that both their thermostats functioning accurately (and verified by my double thermometers)

Does, or does that not seem like a worthwhile thing (especially in this upcoming 6 foot long(or longer) tank?
And if one happened to suddenly malfunction....I would be without any heater at all(as I would be if I was using only one per tank).

It's recommended to use 2 small heaters instead of a larger one. If one fails you have a backup, and with reduced load on each heater it'll last longer.

Now if I could follow my own advice LOL.

In big tanks like a 6ft I have used two heaters. It ensures there are no cold spots in the water and if one stops working there is a back up. One heater in a tank that big would be constantly on IMO.

I use two heaters, unless the tank is pretty small. Another advantage of using two heaters rated a little lower than the tank is the chance one gets stuck on. Being rated for a smaller tank it would allow more time before it heated the tank to deadly levels. I also found the heaters to be significantly cheaper online from reliable sites than the LFS.

What does that mean, Bob? "Till the cows come home." Where have the cows been?

I have always had two heaters in my big tanks. I also recommend when you buy them buy a spare one as well. One will fail it might not happen for a long time but it will happen and when it does you can guarantee it will be a very bad time.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
