Cacked tank to this in about two hours | |
keithgh *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 6371 Kudos: 6918 Votes: 1542 Registered: 26-Apr-2003 | Today Sun as usual started with heating up all the water for the weekly water change. This time I decided to pull out the center pieces of Drift Wood and clean that area (that was the purpose of the DW) Just as I finished I saw a small crack at the top of the front glass right in the center. Knowing what I new about glass I quickly realized that crack will move very fast. By the time I got ready to empty the tank it had doubled in length ad as I started to empty the tank of every thing I could actually see it moving. Two hours later it had extended the full width of the glass as shown in first photo. Luckily I had a terrarium tank (not set up yet) I took out all the rocks and DW then I syphoned as much water as I could trying to keep ahead of the crack. It was a race. Next trying to catch all the fish. More water more fish and this kept going finally the crack beat me but not one drop of water lost on the floor. I also had a new large plastic bin always kept for tank only just in case. Finally got every thing into their temporary home. Last two photos were taken 2 hrs after I started syphoning the water. Now next new tank (it should be an insurance claim last one was. I will be getting one made up 5ft x 1ft 9ins x 18ins wide this will be inches higher and give me an extra 53Lt - 11 US-gal. My UGF is getting old and does not fully cover the ba I recently bought 5 Yoyos and I thought I lost three but no I have only lost one. As a safety I added Melafix for the stress and Stress Zyme as I only have the Eheim Pro11 canister going Mon morning ordering new tank and if lucky I should have it with in two weeks. Just checked the tank was 6 years & 1 months old Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. I VOTE DO YOU if not WHY NOT? I can just imagine all the water exploding out of the tank all over the floor. That would've been something fierce to try to clean up. I thought Terrarium tanks were normally made with thinner glass, making them unsuitable to hold lots of water? I'd keep my eyes to make sure that thing doesn't go either. -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

I'm also curious if you know the cause. 6 years ain't nearly long enough for a tank. -------------------------------------------- The aquarist is one who must learn the ways of the biologist, the chemist, and the veterinarian. |

Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | Hey Keith - amazing save! I don't know that I'd have the resources (re: big enough alternative tank/container) to house my fish if that happened? Something for me to think about. Also - I didn't realize you could insure your fish tank? How does that work? Are there scenarios that the company does and does not cover? All I have to pay is the first $100 for each claim Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info Look here for my Betta 11Gal Desktop & Placidity 5ft Community Tank Photos Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. Hari Seldon Hobbyist Posts: 87 Kudos: 40 Registered: 24-Aug-2007 | So as long as you are not the cause of the damage to the tank, you are re-imbursed the estimated value of the tank minus 100 dollars? 72G Bowfront. 1 Sunshine Peacock, 2 Yellow Labs, 1 Ps. keithgh *Ultimate Fish Guru* Posts: 6371 Kudos: 6918 Votes: 1542 Registered: 26-Apr-2003 | No it is the actual replacement of a tank the same size & type (NOT A REPAIR) as they will never repair a tank. Last time the 4ft cracked the bottom and I paid the extra to upgrade to a 5ft plus the $100. That would be correct if I was shifting it and fell possibly no. If I was working above and dropped a hammer or ladder slipped and broke the tank it would be a yes.
