hello all!

i have four tanks in my bedroom (i know its nuts, see my profile for a list on sizes/whats in them) and i also have white carpet! at least i used to have white carpet, its now more a yellow/grey and black in some patches.

also last night i accendly siphoned about 30L of water from my 3footer onto the floor (stupid new filter!)

my question is this!

what is the best way to dry spills on carpet, and what is the best way to remove water marks?

one thing my girlfriends mum suggested is boiling hot water and ammonia on a white cloth and down on the hands and knees and scrub!

that might be good for the marks but what about the wet?

You can get a wet/dry vacuum and then vacuum up as much of the moisture as possible, it may almost be too late, but you could give it a try. A fan placed near the spill blowing across it will help to dry out and evaporate the remaining moisture.

The problem is that the water gets into the carpeting pad, and if it is a wood floor beneath the carpet can cause damage there also. If left along it can cause a serious mildew or mold problem, that not only will ruin the carpet, it can also cause damage to the subflooring. It can also cause health problems in those individuals with allergies or respritory problems.

Get some wool wash that would be used for washing clothes. I have found it works wonders on carpet stains. Dont scrub too hard on the carpet though as this will grind the muck into the carpet more. Use a dabbing type movement. Make sure you get that carpet dry or it will get very smelly.

Good luck!

From experience, I strongly suggest pulling back the carpet and removing the pad that has absorbed moisture. You will never get the moisture out of the pad and it will mold. With the carpet pulled back, you should ventilate the area to dry out the carpet backing and concrete, both will mold. You will also want to mix a diluted water and bleach solution (19 water to 1 bleach) in a spray bottle and spray the carpet backing and concrete floor.

Oh, my spill required pulling up three rooms of carpet, replacing a ceiling and two walls.

I'm older and should have known better. The overflow flooded my home office and poured through the floor to my recently finished basement. Drywall ceiling and walls were soaked through and a river ran through my carpet.

My wife did much more than say, "Oh, my!"

It was just a 30G. My wife asked me to help her. The help turned into a task that turned into a project. I think the python overflowed the tank for at least 30 minutes...
