Hey

The piece of DW in my nano tank has been there for about 4 months now and was soaked for 2 weeks prior to placing it in the tank. It appeared to stop leaching tannins after 2 weeks in the tank (ie 4 weeks total submerged).

I added an otto to the tank a couple of months ago and since then the tannins have reappeared - even with twice weekly water changes (10%) and weekly carbon changes I still have water the colour of strong tea... I don't mind a little tannin staining but this is a bit excessive.

Is it possible that the otto sucking / rasping on the DW is causing the wood to release more tannins or is the introduction of the otto and the apparent increase in tannins just coincidental?

Looks like you have a piece of DW that just releases tannins no matter what you do. I would think it is just a natural break down of the timber. It is possibly a softer wood which tend to release most of the tannins.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

Hi,
Actually, yes, the fish is probably causing the increase
in tannins. As the tanic acids leech into the water an
area of depleted tanins forms and acts as a sort of a
boundary that retards the leaching process. In essence it
forms a weathering rind. The rasping of the fish digs
into the rind if not through it, and allows the tannins
deeper under the surface a way out.
