I will never touch another one of their cannisters in my life. I've never had so much trouble with a filter or so much water on the floor and it didn't filter that well. An hob would have done a better job and had more media options for alot less effort. Marineland has some of the best powerfilters on the market but they should have stuck with those and left the cannisters to others. Eheim concentrates on only cannisters and has arguably the best quality out there but the price definitely isn't the best. |

You also can get excellent service as well as the spares are easy to get. One word of warning make sure that the box is unopened as some LFS have been known to take parts out for spare parts and forgetting to replace them. Finally get them to show you how to set it up this will make the setting up process a lot easer. Jakob, Your post was a statement and a question but you gave no indication of the tank that you would be using the filter on nor did you indicate if you were looking at a particular Eheim or Marineland unit. If you would like an Eheim Thermofilter, I can give you a great price. It worked marvelously for two years. After two years, the head seal had deteriorated and began to leak during a power outage. Thankfully, my wife came home and felt the 35 gallons of my 125 gallon tank that had been siphoned to the floor by the unit. The damage was not covered by Eheim although I was able to use my Home Owner's insurance for the carpet and underlayment replacement. I now use AquaClear filters exclusively for my discus tanks. There is no danger of inadvertent siphoning from the tank. It is easier to clean. I never had to buy inserts or cartridges or overpriced pads or cut material to create a pad. The units are indestructible and less than half the price of an Eheim. Remember, I can sell you a quality Eheim at a great price with a brand new head gasket. Email me at RAWesolowski@Yahoo.com, I ship! __________ "To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." researched from Steven Wright |

CucumberSlices Banned Posts: 63 Registered: 11-Jul-2007 | why thank you bob, i was trying to figure out what filter company was better than the other. they dont have to be large ones being i dont have a large tank. im looking at ones that filter around 30-55 gallons(ish) my largest tank atm is a 29 gallon, and i have two 20 gallons that need new filters, i have hob's on all of them right now, and i would like to convert over to canister. one of the hobs is fairly new, so i would be keeping that one for misc. use (marineland, penguin Bio-Wheel 200). And i would like to keep my older Bio-wheel as well for random use's (Bio-Wheel 150). Im looking for something that is affordable, and can filter my tanks properly (im not a huge fan of hob filters). My 29 gallon tank will need very good filtering when my clown pleco's (I only have two) get bigger, being that they produce large amounts of waste. As for the two 20 gallon tanks, one is in the process of cycling, and the other just has guppies and an over-sized (for the 20 gallon) gibby pleco. I would like to keep the filters the same for the two 20 gallons. As for the 29 i would want a bigger filter, but not by much. |

They can dry out if no silicone lube is used. Keith Near enough is not good enough, therefore good enough is not near enough, and only your best will do. I VOTE DO YOU if not WHY NOT? sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | If your looking for affordable but still good quality cannisters then your looking at the wrong companies. You need to look into rena or fluvals. Those are generally considered the common midrange cannisters that still filter better than an hob, have a good lifespan, but don't cost a fortune. Maybe fluval's latest line is better but otherwise I'd pick rena over fluvals and definitely a better choice than marineland's magnums. Eheims are great if you've got cash to burn but not when your on a budget and especially if you want new cannisters for multiple tanks they aren't such a good option. |
