i have just noticed some hair algae starting to grow on my tanks "greek urn", all the bottom feeders like to shoot in and out/ rest in there, it was transfered from my smaller tank at christmas without any cleaning, although one plant in the smaller tank did have a hair algae problem but did not go in the new tank.
so has the algae been on the urn, and if so can it be cleaned off? or shall i just replace the urn.

You could just rinse it off with hot water, and scrub very well to remove the visible algae. If you want it all gone, then you have to remove the source, ie: Excess lighting, and excess nutrients, etc.

I agree take it out and give it a good cleaning just using water (NO chemicals or soaps)
Even if you remove 100% it will still be in the tank you must locate the cause and remedy that unless you want through the cleaning practice regularly. If you want to remove it from your tanks more info is required so that we can assist you there. I also suggest you read this algar info
Algae info

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info
