Today Mon I just about to do the water change and filter cleaning when I noticed all the CLs at one end of the tank. This is not normal behaviour even for a non feeding day.

When I had removed all the water down to the mark on the side of the tank and about to start on the filter I noticed a silvery???? on the roof of the big cave (where the CLs hang out) on closer inspection it turned out to be a dead Pictus the second within a month. (I bought 3 at same time several years ago) After I removed it the CLs returned back to this cave.

The Pictus would have only died hrs before as they was no markings on it at all.

Good catch! I always look for unusual behavior whenever I look at the tank, and during feeding time try to look over each fish as best I can (this can be difficult with schooling fish).

Sorry you're loosing those cats keith! I wonder what the problem is, after all this time?

Did the first one die after you're redo of the tank? I've read that sometimes after a redo like that you may loose a fish or two because you have stirred up some gunk or bacteria that was well hidden & the fish got to it. This is all I can think of that might have happened to them, as I know you take very well care of your tanks. I hope this is the end of it, whatever it is & there are no more reoccurring deaths.

Sorry to hear you lost your Pictus Keith

It sounds like they are hitting the limit of their normal captive lifespan most people have them about 5-8 yrs.

sorry to hear that Keith, I agree with patty, major reconfigurations can be stressfull for alot of fish allowing then to be more e to disease/infestations, you mentioned that you saw no visible markings on it at all, makes me wonder if a case of ick might be going through your pictus population, I have read that ick (white spot) is particulary nasty on scaleless fish as the parasite digs in so deep, it does serious damage even before the white spots are visible.
keep an extra eye on the remaining cat, listless in a corner or gasping for air at the surface, or any other unusual behavior.
hope all turns out for the best !!

Sorry for the loss of the Pictus Keith! Those Cats were lovely! I hope it didnt have any diseases or whatnot, because the Clown Loaches might have picked it up if they ate it. I remember when i gravel vacced the tank one day, and was shocked to find a dead carkass of a male swordtail just hidden under a notch in the fake DW. It must have been dead for a bit under a month. They smell too......

Hope all goes well! Are you going to get a new pictus? I would think that would be great if you did!

It has been since the big rescape I also noticed their unusual behaviour eg being visible more often. At one stage I thought I only had two but after the rescape I found the largest of the three.

Just because your loaches are devious does not mean you are not observant. I have a pair of amano shrimp (I've had them 2-3ish years now), and I can go weeks at a time only seeing one...and when I kept them with CA cichlids for about 6 months I never saw them and presumed they had become dinner.

I've kept certain catfishes I haven't seen for months at a time. Every now and then I'd check their hidey hole to see if I could see their mouth sticking out, but that would be all they would show if anything at all. Obviously they were eating, but I'd never see them actually do so. One such catfish was an approximately 2" Horabagrus brachysoma that disappeared into a huge clump of Java Moss I had; it reappeared a few months later at a much larger size!

My black lancer is the same way; I just have to go out of my way to look for it. Once it gets bigger I'm hoping it won't be such a problem, hehe. As far as having an eye for where fish are hiding, I think I'm relatively observant, but I have to be with some of the more reclusive species I've kept.

Observant, tonight just before lights-out for the fish, noticed that ALL of my fish were "looking" due East, even the plecos' all purdy much motionless, the prevailing water current is on thier backs.. they've all been like this for 45 min. now... I know that being familiar with animal behavior as far as observing differences between normal& abnormal, can be indications of just about anything... so.... if anyone hears on the news tomorrow of a earthquake in Western Washington....or Mt. Rainier blows its top off... well maybe they were trying to tell me something ... hehe, we shall see, but hopefully not.

Keith,
Sorry to hear about the pictus, I hate finding deceased fish and not knowing why they die. I recently had a swordtail die and the day before he was perfectly fine eating and swimming. It was a real bummer because he was one of my first additions to my tank. Thats why this hobby isn't as easy as everyone makes it out to be, one day your fish are happy the next they are stressed.
