I bought on ebay some moonlights for my 55 gallon tank.
The lights arrived today and I installed them.
Totally cool! WHat is so neat is that I now get to see my fish in an entire new light. LOL
My cats that I never see when the regular lights are on I can now see, they come out and are so active and chase each other and play. Its so neat! I sat for an hour just watching what goes at night.
I am wondering if these lights are ok to stay on all night on a timer or should I set them to go off maybe around 2 am and let the fish be in total darkness.
Ok, back to watching the action..

Don't leave them on all night. Fish do best with a period of complete darkness. Not every night outside is a full moon and the blue lights put on tanks can be even brighter than that. I'd get a seperate timer for them, doesn't have to be anything expensive, and have them come on in the evening shortly before your regular lights go off and then turn off after you go to bed or are no longer there to watch the tank.

Yeah, don't leave them on all night, get another timer for them. It's not like you're up all night to watch them, so just leave the moonlights on for a few hours after the main light goes out.

But I know what you mean, it is totally amazing to watch your nocturnal fish. I have a raphael cat that hides all day and only comes out to cruise the bottom during feeding time. But when the moonlights come on, the raphael cat is master of the tank and patrols all over the tank, even the mid and upper reaches. Some people think moonlights are silly, but I think they're totally worth getting if you have nocturnal fish that are very shy during the day.

Hoping that there must be a word for everything I mean...

I put a timer on the moonlights so they will only come on for a couple hours.
I was up half the night watching the fish. They are totally differant to watch with the moonlights.
The cats are just crazy! They were all over the place.
Dont know why people would think they are silly to have. Like you said, if you have nocturnal fish then these lights are the bomb to have!

Which moonlights did you get? Do you still have the link for ebay? Can we see them?

Thanks for your input as always, Shane

Hi,
Generally speaking, you would want to put your daytime
lights on for a period of about 10 hours, and then set
the "Moonlights" to come on for another two to four hours,
followed by complete darkness.

Essentially the tank should be "unlit" for at least an
8 hour period.
