well i moved states and decided after a decade of keeping only south americans, i would move aquatic regions too. the removalists were extra-careful with the 6 footer (always a nightmare to move) and i've gone asian.

i have to say, changing region has been quite amazing - the fish are so different! the stocking list is:

dwarf flame gouramis, 2 trios
betta splendens, 1 pelak sapphire blue male (stunning) and three blood-red females
30 harlequin rasbora (heteromorpha)

but i couldn't get rid of my sturisoma panamense, so the algae-eating crew remains south american...they are, in my opinion, the most beautiful fish ever, and fit in with any heavily planted tank.

the plants are coming along nicely, with the red and green tiger lotus starting to send up their first surface leaves, which is where i hope the bubble-nesters will build.

i am thinking of a small crew of loaches - maybe yoyos or kuhlis - any other recommendations? (i'm obviously looking at 'asia' as a pretty huge area including the sub-continent!!)

thanks in advance

justin

Don't mix betta splendens with dwarf gouramis or any gouramis for that matter! the male betta splendens will probably kill all the dwarf gouramis and maybe the female bettas aswell.
if the betta splendens has long fins, the other fish may be able to get away from him in that size tank but i wouldnt bet on it. larger gouramis arent a good choice either becauase they will not hesitate when the male betta
chalenges them to a fight, this would result in a dead or badly wounded male betta.
you could probably swap the fighting fish for a trio of pearl gouramis without any problems.
Or you could replace the dwarf gouramis with another school.
either yoyos or kuhlis are a good choice, they are my favourite loaches.

The blue opaline gourami are a good choice very hardy and extremly easy to look after. With your choice it would not be a good home for a betta.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

lesson learnt!! the male betta is a beast - i have never kept them with females before, and never kept a short finned male before - he was just attacking everyone, so he's been moved into his own tank in the bathroom. he's gorgeous, but a bastard!!

the dwarf gourami males are both busily blowing bubbles in opposite corners of the tank, and scavenging around for plant matter to make their nests, so i hope there might be some breeding displays and attempts at babies. i'm not expecting the babies to survive the harlequins.

and i decided on five kuhlis and three yoyos - they are such fun fish! all eight have settled in very nicely.
