Hi there!

I have some major snail problems, and have started to crush the visible snails. My tank is a 20 gallon and i cant possibly find and kill every snail in there. I will need to use the bait-and-remove strategy for my tank, but the problem is, nobody in my family likes cucumbers. I dont hate em, and neither does my mom, but we just dont really like em. I will try to get some the next time we go shopping (next week) and then try it. In the meantime, can i use celery or lettuce to attract the snails, or am i just going to make a mess. I have a pleco, so will that be a problem? I could put it in a cage...( THe cucumber mind you )

ANyway, if i can do the celery or lettuce substitute, then how thick should i cut it, and how many pieces should i put in? WHen i get a cucumber, how thick should i slice it, and how many pieces should i put in? If you have pix, could you post a link? Thank you all!!!

*EDIT: We like zuccini, will that be as good?

Lettuce will work fine. If you have a small cup or something that the pleco can't fit into, put the lettuce in that and the whole shebang into the tank. Plus, that makes it easier to take out without losing snails back into the tank. I usually use romaine and take a couple of leaves off of it, roll 'em up kinda tight, and stick them into an Erlenmeyer flask (yes, I do have those around the house ). Works wonders.

I use a 150 mL flask. It works well. On a good night, I can get a few dozen snails.

It is not only the snails that have to be removed it is all the eggs otherwise you will never get rid of all the snails.

With a 20g you should be able to have 1 or two Yoyo loaches, to clean up the eggs. In the mean time keep using the lettuce in a container that the Pleco can not get into.

In an outside garden snail bait is put into a plastic drink bottle to protect other animals, it is then just a matter of emptying them out.

Have a look in [link=My Profile] http://www.fishprofiles.com/forums/member.aspx?id=1935[/link] for my tank info

UPDATE: I have tried it with a small, kids size waterbottle (8 FL oz.) and stuffed like 3-4 pieces of rolled up romaine. I picked it up today, and boy am i surprised. Both in a good way and bad. Good, because it included some snails, but bad enough for me to realize that it is going to take a LONG time for me to rid them. I am still awaiting the shipment of fish to come in from my LFS, and i hope they have some kind of loach besides clowns. I was hoping that petsmart would have either zebras and kuhlis, or some other small loach and kuhlis.

Are yoyos hard to find? I have never seen one in my life, except in pix. If they are common and if they are in stock i will definately buy like 4 of them, as they do need to be in groups of 4+ right?

Anyway, i think that i will have a long time trying to remove the snails, and repair the damage. For now, the lettuce will have to do, until i get a cucumber.

THanx again!!!
