After completing a water change yesterday i observed little creatures swimming in the water and sitting on the glass.

The kind of looked like BBS, they were white, tiny and moved in the 'stop start' fashion the BBS do. The didn't seem to be attacking or affecting the fish in any way that i could see.

Does anyone know what they are, and why they are suddenly in my tank?

i havent added anything new to the tank in a while so if they were introduced, the water added to the tank would seem the only way?

Look forward to peoples thoughts on this!

Thanks

Hi,
Specifically what they are, I've no idea. But, in general,
some flying creature has landed in your aquarium and has
bred. What you are seeing is the early stages of its life
cycle. Some of these can be hazardous to fish and most
are not. In fact, in most cases the fish will love the
additional live food in the tank. The problem is when they
mature and start flying around the house.

You might want to catch a couple, put them on a slide, and
look at them under a microscope or through a magnifying
glass. Make sure they don't have pincers at the head or
the tail. Those could attach themselves to your fish and
cause problems.

Their method of movement makes me think Daphnia (water fleas), and the description fits as well. They are good food for your fish and only feed on smaller plankton - you don't have to worry about them hurting the fish.

If there are a lot of them in the tank it might mean you are overfeeding and/or there is not enough circulation in the water column.

Thanks for your replies!!

Frank - your theory of bug infestion does worry me! im not the biggest bug fan!! but it does seem plausible! ive recently seen some little mini flying bugs hovering around.

However i will try to locate a magnifying glass and have a better look at them. hopefully Natalie is right! i have been overfeeding a tad at the same time!

fingers crossed this is nothing major!

ok i tried to look at the them with a magnifying glass however they are much to tiny and it didnt do much. Dont have access to a microscope.

I did observe my black neon tetra munching on something in the vicinty of where they were on the glass so im hoping that they will eat them all and the problem will disappear!

will write back here if the prob gets worse. Thanks for all your advice.

What you describe sounds very like some creatures I found in my tank at one time a year or so ago. Cali gave me advice very similar to Natalie's, though I'm sure he didn't call them Daphnia. All the same, they were of no concern, fish would eat them & their cause could have been overfeeding. At the time I had no fish in the tank (in-between changing tank's occupants around). I eradicated them with a med containing prazi, as I thought them unsightly.

I've searched for the thread to share with you, but as I can't remember subject name, or which forum, I can't find the thread.

Cheers

im hoping that they just get eaten, however i have reduced the amount of feeding.. so fingers are crossed they disappear!
